I've heard light colored pellets are best, I've heard dark colored pellets are best. Last years Barefoot super premium hardwood pellets were very light. This years load is very dark. I opened 6 random bags and put them in my storage bin.., all dark. In terms we all understand, last years are BudLight color, this years are Sam Adams color. Opinions? ( not about the beer...you know you were going to...)
Every time someone sees dark pellets they think bark. IMHO wood darkens with age if left in the elements. So I would not judge by color alone. Just my 2 pennies......
My Harman doesn't care what color the pellets are. They all burn really well. Whatever temp I set the stove for is what I get. Doesn't seem to matter much except for the amount of ash.
No Harman but same here. I generally think lighter pellets are better. May not be in real world but it seems to me the lighter ones burn best
If you are familiar with Lacretes, they are a very light color. When I scored some Blazers, I was expecting the same and was surprised to see they were a lot darker. Yet hotter with less ash. So color doesn't mean a thing to me.
The dark pellets I have burned have not been good; TSC horse bedding (dark, dark) - worst thing I've burned hands down. My current ThermaGlo's (almost gone - yay!) are very dark pellets and very ashy and cool burning. The Currans from two years ago were pretty dark, ashy and cold. Yeah, the P61a burns them and heats what it is supposed to, but lighter color pellets have been so much better for me (PTL, Okie golds, FSU's, Vermonts etc)
Agree with the other 3 above. In general I usually do better with lighter colored pellets. Exceptions to this are Blazers, Bear Mountains, Olympus, and best of all PTL Softies, all of which I consider dark but burned nicely. Maybe it's the dark pellets with fir in them that do well.
I've burned PTL's for years and I liked them all. But years ago when they were darker? They were better!! Same with Sets and Lignetics (yellow labels). Color doesn't matter to me. It's all in what my thermocouple reads air temperature out of the heat exchanger as.
