This cherry has been down, off the ground for 18 mos---It feels real light, cant wait to MM it-any bets its good to go?
Looks nice, but it'll probably need to be split and set for a year. Check it with the MM and let us know. Is that train track you've got your wood on?
Looks like great wood ashwatcher. Ive never cut or burned cherry but that looks like some solid btu s to me.
NortheastAl thats the rail rack, you will see more of them on the bank, I plan to rig up at least one more-they are @33' long-that rack full holds a cord tamarack its a good shoulder wood or lil better-it smells wonderful and of course is great for smoking meats Locust Post I'll be sure and check it, prob split it this week-I have a feeling you are close to the %-the entire length has not been on the ground...
I'm betting it could be burned this winter if it is needed. Looks typical with that outer layer starting to show a bit of punk but that won't harm it in the least except to say, get it covered as soon after splitting as you can. Wood is not a sponge but punky wood certainly is.
No punk, just the "barnacles"-rock solid but prob right on the verge-I'll get it split this week and under cover-Thx Sir!
Got that last load split-and the MM reading on 18 mos downed but propped off ground cherry...but first note on the splitter above and prepare for the gnarliest, nastiest ash you've ever seen!
If all ash split like this, I'd go without! I swear some pieces were so bad I refused to stack them and used them as more weight on the metal roof covered stacks---
OK, .....the tarp is too much. Let me guess the wife's idea..................DONT YOU MAKE A MESS OUT THERE FOR ME TO CLEAN UP
Ah c'mon EnglishBob !!! You want to rake up all that chafe? Part of the good news is I now have a 10 gal bucket full of kindling for the next couple years...pick up what you want, then grab the four corners of the tarp and go to the creek bank... (She might have said something bout a mess...)
The other good news is that the 18 mos down cherry...Good to burn (if needed),,,tested 4 diff splits, range btwn pics posted-Thx to Locust Post for venturing a guess and with whom I agreed, and to NortheastAl for having no faith...and to Backwoods Savage - Winner, winner-Chicken dinner!!!
And the finished product-right at another 1/2 ton truckload and the rail rack is full again...Bringing in some hickory over the weekend-tree down, cousin has skidded up to the gate---SO wants some wood cookie place mats and centerpiece...
Nice work Ashwatcher, but I'll venture a guess too.... You must have a round of golf or two upcoming, cause you barely sunk those pins into them split faces.... Just ribbin ya a bit bud..... But really, jus sayin.....
They were firmly implanted...she said so anyway...now what time do I tee off? Actually shifting into hunt mode but of course I'm playing-Year round here-long as no frost on the greens-Prob do all 3 this weekend...got to cut the cookies for the boss, run the trail cams, play 18 holes, watch the undefeated Mountaineers and make time for momma...
Ugh, guess thats 5 things...math not my strong point...Hope all are well, staying warm and hoarding forward...
That stuff splits up like elm can't stand it myself but there's a lot standing dead around here so sometimes you just have to
I have never had any issue with it-for years mine has been straight grained or with minimal twist...guess it went from one extreme to the other...but I sure like to burn it...love to watch it...
Cut dead ash and dead elm out of a bucket a few times and just let it fall into a pile it sounded like bowling pins hitting the ground nice hard and dry music to my ears!
