    My propane tank is property of the company that fills it, my current price is $1.20 gallon. They locked the price this winter at $1.30 gallon.

    This is CRAP. I would like to hear the details when you get a replacement supplier.

    Larry, I am no more than 10 miles from Fielding's delivery area and have tried to talk them into coming here but no dice. If anything, Rymes oil and propane might be an option, but unless bogieb can get that tank replaced, it sounds like she is stuck.

    I am so glad to not have had propane as it seems you are married to the company and if its a bad marriage they hold the cards.

    Here is the average for NH heating fuel prices for this week.

    Yeah, I could have locked in at $3.20 - but would have had to pay the company $129 for the privilege back in June (no, that isn't a prepay - it is an actual separate bribe to get them to lock the price).

    Yeah, and since most (not all) companies add on a surcharge for tank rental (up to $1/gal for 5 years), and then there is the set up fee, and then there is the leak check fee after set up. So just trading to another company may not help at all when all is said and done.

    This in today's paper:
    Heating costs likely to rise moderately this winter in Maine
    Prices will be higher and it's expected to be colder than last year's mild season, but there appear to be ample supplies of all fuel types.
    So brilliant!

    Seriously? It is 351% efficient? Must be in base 6 instead of base 10 since AFAIK, the limit is 100% efficiency.

    Okay boys and girls, what does 351 in base 6 represent? Lets see, let's do the easy stuff first;
    1 = 1,
    10 = 6 and 6 x 5 = 30
    100 = 36 and 36 x 3 = 108.

    108+30+1 = 139. Hmm, still a way high efficiency :rolleyes:

    Not to metion that most heat pumps no workie that well once temps drop below 20 degree's. Most users have an alternate form to assist if not take over once temps drop.

    Newer systems are much better these days. But afait still may have to have an assist in low temps IIRC.

    I didn't know the propane business was such a racket. It's like they are holding you hostage. Is this the way it is across the board or are we just looking at some real bad apples here? Seems to me there must be some folks who are happy with it out there, so just curious to know why this particular situation is so awful. Is this just plain old fashioned gouging?

    LP is much cheaper the past 2 years. But we've gone 7 years and have not bought one gallon. So I'd rather stick with something that I see as a hobby. My family loves to help me stack Wood and pellets. So I could save a couple hundred bucks this year (possibly?) , but I know that crude oil will go back up. So I'd rather not get lazy and rely on my LP furnace. I have a pellet furnace to rely on. And I know how to fix and troubleshoot it!!

    Heat pumps are selling very well here. Everyone I know who has one, loves them. I know of an apartment landlord who has only heat pumps in his apartments. To me, that is too risky is this climate, but he says it has proven to work well for him.
    I have a new LP furnace and HW system. Not what I wanted, but had to go that way to keep everyone involved happy. The system is very efficient at 95%. But it is costly. The comfort is if I pass away, my wife can just turn on the thermostat and not have to worry about doing anything beside paying the bill. I think she can now manage the pellet stove except for the cleaning.

    Some companies are more of a racket than others. The company that came with the house just happens to be the worst at it. And I am pretty darn sure that even though they will be getting about 100 gallons back when I have them pick up the tank I will end up owing them money, or it will come out as a wash, because their "moving" and "service" charges will be just at, or over, whatever they pay (which will not be my last buy price of $3.33/gallon). Oh, and if you have too much gas, you get charged to pump it back into a tanker because they can't transport the tank with over X amount in it. I may get hit with this charge too because it may be as little as 5-10% - and I'm at around 20%. That is actually a state/fed regulation that discourages attempts at changing suppliers because you get down that low, and you might as well be out.

    I've had this company before at my previous house and after they started charging $25/quarter for rental of two 40# tanks (because we didn't use enough - duh, it was only a cook stove), we bought our own tanks. One tank was almost full, and it was pretty sad that the services charges etc. came up to exactly the amount they would have reimbursed us for the gas - down to the penny.

    I don't know how this company stays in business because they are the worst in the state, as far as I can tell, and I haven't found a person that had a good word for them.

    Yep, just checked - if it is over 5% I will get hit with $149 charge.

    That's okay. The company I am going with charges $1.00 less per gallon, so that is already paid for in the first fill up.

    Well, that is unknown at this time because I haven't gotten the new tanks yet, so it will be whatever they are charging at the time (scheduled for just before Thanksgiving). However, if I had been able to get tanks in last week, it would have been $2.70/gallon

    We have an oil burner with forced air and pretty leaky ducts. Nice for emergency back up, but my mwp blend pellets have proven themselves over 5 winters and i get 6 tons delivered for a flat fee of around $75 and i payed $219 a ton this year.

    No way i am trading the awesome even heat my stove gives for the on again off again, cool then warm then cool of forced air.
