Okay folks, here me out on this...

Brad (hdtoolmkr765) pitched out an idea about a building a badass junkyard dog GTG-special saw composed as much as possible from parts donated by FHC members. We could build the frankensaw, maybe pass it around for some GTG fun, then ultimately raffle it off. We discussed it a bit and figured the proceeds can be donated to support the site. Who's coming with us???

So, we're thinking it'll go a little something like this; we pick a saw and figure out who has what for it that they're willing to contribute. Anyone wanting to help with the saw, but without parts to supply can donate money as we will almost definitely have to make some purchases along the way and maybe even some upgrades. Not to mention it may be getting shipped around for sharing.

Our focus should be rough, but usable parts. We want it to be a runner, but not a beauty queen. Redneck repairs or add-ons are not just welcome, but encouraged, the uglier the better. A true junkyard dog frankensaw!

It's a decision the group can certainly make, but Brad and I figured a saw whose parts are easy to find and abundant, but a popular model & size. We're both Stihl guys, so we were thinking an 1128 series. Right now we're leaning towards either an 046/460 or an 044/440 hybrid.

    So, what does everyone think?

Beau and I talked a little bit about this offline, and I offered up either a set of 460 cases and crank or 440 cases and crank if we want to build a hybrid. I have both, so I'm down for whatever. Like Beau said we are wanting something ugly on the outside but a runner. So, as soon as we decide on a saw I'm up for whatever... I'm all for giving a donation to this site cause I like it here. Whatever makes it all tick, you guys do a great job, be cool to get a chance to give something back..

And I have an 046 tank housing to add. It will work for either the 460 or 440 cases since I also have an air filter base for an 044 that's been modified to accommodate an 046 tank housing.

I don't have any parts to contribute but I think its a great idea! A 044/440 hybrid would make a gooder sleeper saw!:saw:

If no one has a specific saw porter in mind I bet Red97 could have his pinky twisted into working his black magik on it. Depending on his work schedule of course. I'd be happy to kick in some cashola if we fall short on parts donations.

Sounds like a really cool idea! Seems like it could be a real challenge though, getting all the parts together via donations.

I used to have a spare 460 DP muffler, but I ended up selling it. I have a handful of other random Stihl parts for other saws, like a 660 oiler, but I'm not sure if any of it will help.

Perhaps a list of the remaining required parts could jog some spare parts memories from other members?

I'd pitch in. I'm game for whatever. Let me know what y'all decide on and we'll go from there. I'll make a custom set of wicked-azz bucking spikes for whatever you guys decide on, and I'll kick in some jingle.

Agreed. My plan was that once we decide on the specific saw/model I would start a list of needs.

The thing is, both Brad and I each have all of the parts we'd need for an 1128 series saw build, but we felt like it would be better if this was a group effort so everyone can be involved and be a part of it in some way. As mentioned, even if folks don't have parts, other donations would work whether it's cash, or some other items that could be traded or sold to get what we need. I'm sure we'll be buying some stuff, even if it's soft parts, seals, bearings, rings, etc.

Sounds like we are doing a hybrid? Unless I hear otherwise I will send beau a set of 440 cases and crank.

Then you could cram it all in an old McCullough case and put a Pioneer bar on it.....

Keeping in mind the crustier and uglier the better, the parts we would need for a hybrid would be a 044/440 top cover, air filter cover, wrap handle, recoil, muffler, clutch cover, air filter base, the internals (don't have to be ugly, just serviceable), crank bearings, intake boot, impulse hose, fuel line and filter, clutch, oil pump worm gear, drum and sprocket, drum bearing, brake band, brake spring, brake linkage, brake handle, brake cover, coil, flywheel, wiring, oil pickup tube and screen, oil pump, crank seals, throttle and choke linkage, air filter.....I may be forgetting something, I've only built one or two saws....

I forgot piston, rings, wrist pin and bearing, and of course bar and chain.

Preferably, other than possibly a Meteor piston.
