Thanks brenndatomu . I'd take the credit, but I borrowed the idea from a fellow on Amazon who posted pics cleaning his flue bottom up. I've made a bigger mess with bbq ribs at dinner.

Just went to Menards; currently online price was $52.99 and yes, there is a 11% rebate, however, the rebate is useless to me....
    Website states:
*The displayed final price is your price today after mail-in rebate and is subject to the terms and time frame of the rebate. Rebate is in the form of a merchandise credit check which may only be redeemed in store.

So useless to me because there are no Menards down here. So I pay $52.99 plus Memards handling fee (yes, they charge you to put it in a box) plus the shipping fee to send it to me. So I end up paying more for it than the regular price.

Someone said to get a poly brush but it does not come with the poles; so that is extra and all together may be as much as the sooteater.

Yes, the rebate is a store check. For me, and many others, Menards stores are close.

That said John Menard is from Wisconsin, so it makes sense there's several stores close enough for me to drive to.

Yes, a poly brush is the best for the liner a or metal pipe chimneys. The poles are needed too, but those are not that much. The different brushes screw into the poles. So they are interchangeable.

And a store cheque is not really a rebate; they still get the money. A real rebate is where you get to keep the money.

Same thing to me, I go to the store and come home with the stuff I want with no additional money out of my pocket...so yeah, they get the money back and I get my stuff, win win. But I have a store nearby so that helps...you'd be better off ordering a Soot Eater from Amazon or somewhere sounds like to me

No, Menards wins because to have to buy more stuff or just forget the rebate cheque and use it to like the kindling.

Maybe I'm way off and granted it is fluffy and not black tar but that to me seems like a fairly heavy build up, especially close to the stove where the heat is. Maybe the oak was not quite there ? Of course maybe I am just blessed to have well, well seasoned wood as I think from what I have seen since putting in my cat stove, I just waste my time cleaning as there is nothing in the pipe. Sometimes I have a little on the top screen.

I agree something doesn't look quite right, that's why I posted my pics to compare Brad, maybe the wood is not that great, maybe you don't have the stove down pat yet,
No one here wants to condemn you, just help you burn better, ask and you shall receive:)
There is a learning curve with any stove

I too was thinking it seemed a bit heavy for build up. Not a potshot, just an observation. My pipe looks almost like HDRocks photos, but I get crud right near the top and where it meets the cap, and some on the inside of the cap.

Need more air and a little higher flue temp before settling in? How does your window look?

Of course Menard's wins. John Menard is the richest Wisconsinite. Go figure.

Now for us through, we go to Menard's because they have a lot of stuff. From laundry detergent for schlot , to gloves, sinks, building materials, dog food, plants in spring, beef jerky, and log splitters.

So those of us that do have Menard's stores locally, we go. An in store credit ( what they call a rebate) only is another reason to go.

As far as the amount of buildup, do you have to restart it alot? I have to, (small box and nobody home to keep it going) and I get alot of fluffy crap like pictured.
