Viruses are not affected by antibiotics.

I've had them, I've also declined them. After 60+ years, in my opinion, they probably don't do any harm, but don't seem to do any good for me, either.
I figure if you don't have a really compromised immune system, you might want to think about it. Also a pneumonia inoculation wouldn't hurt.
I guess I am a little suspicious about people wanting to put chemicals and other substances in my body unnecessarily.

I didn't get one for the first 15 years of my adult life, and never got the flu. I even remember one year (might have been 2009) my 2 roommates and one of their girlfriends was knocked out for a full week with the flu (they all had shots) and even living with them the most I got was a sniffle.

But my wife forced me to get one last fall since we would be in the hospital when the baby was born in late October and guess what, I got the flu come February. To be fair that coincided with when we started putting the baby in daycare and I think she brought it home, everyone in the house got sick except for the baby. I ended up getting one this year as well since my work brought in a nurse to give them out and she set up 30 feet from my office. I'll have to wait and see if I get sick this year, but personally I feel it's a crap-shoot either way.

I never get affected immediately after getting a flu shot, but my wife normally gets a head-cold for a couple days whenever she get's a flu shot. You can argue that she doesn't technically have "the flu", but they certainly make her a little sick.

Never gotten the shot (or taken the nasal stuff). Never gotten the flu. My immune system is awesome so I won't mess with it.

Sorry, Firebroad while that read sound informative, remember that the NVIC Newsletter is an organization like PETA and others that have an ax to grind. "The latest bit of anti-vaccine propaganda to come to light to me, albeit rather late, comes from a source other than the usual merry band of anti-vaccine loons over at Age of Autism. Surprisingly, it comes from an older and formerly more famous anti-vaccine organization, one that’s been supplanted by Generation Rescue since it became “Jenny McCarthy’s Autism Organization.” I’m referring to Barbara Loe Fisher’s hoary old National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC), and the propaganda ploy to which I refer is what the NVIC calls its Vaccine Ingredients Calculator (VIC)" this from The NVIC Vaccine Ingredient Calculator: A disingenuous deceptive instrument of vaccine fear mongering I ran a nursing home for many years. I am here to tell you that flu kills. Those who don't get the flu shot pass it on to weak ones who die from it. There are yeas they miss the major strain of virus. Then we are unprotected. Some still get the virus even after the vaccine. But generally, those infections are weaker. My observation was that the flu would severely weaken the elderly and then set them up for an opportunistic infection that would finish them off.

    Thank you, savemoney!
Perhaps this would be a better link:
Vaccine Effectiveness - How Well Does the Flu Vaccine Work? | Seasonal Influenza (Flu) | CDC
As you can see, the CDC also states that the vaccine works about half the time (50-60%), and that it is less effective the older we get.

Interesting - I thought vaccines worked by training the body on how to recognize and fight off the virus - not by making a shield that keeps the virus from being caught.

I like others generally do not get flu shot and when wife insisted I did.. I did feel poorly for a few days and month or so later got the flu.. the shot did not give me the flu but did not protect me either.. but my body is weird.. not allergic to poison ivy but am allergic to tetanus shots have allergies to many vaccines or stuff they put in them.. I also have a good immune system.. mom ran a daycare kids got sick.. no law against it then so when kid a got chicken pox or measles we all caught it and got it over with.. (7 siblings) ..

True enough but I think he meant bacteria that causes infections etc.

The one and only time my wife and I got the flu shot we were sick most of the winter. No flu shots since and we have not had a repeat of that terrible winter.

I get it free at work, I normally don't get sick anyway, but figure it can't hurt.
Last year I missed it as I was away when they gave them, and I still didn't die, even with four disease riddled Crum crunches in the house.
I also get it as I'm a pastor, and visiting nursing homes and hospitals is part of the job

My wife and I both get the flu shot through our jobs.
My dad had a stroke in 2010(he recovered fully) but the doc told him he should get the Flu shot every year because the virus causes inflammation which could trigger another stroke in high risk patients.
He too gets it every year now.
