Beginning of the season. Burn some punky Ash first. Save the good wood for colder weather. I am probably the only person that sorts their wood by quality and burns the less desirable first and waits till real cold sets in to burn the higher btu stuff.

Pine in the shoulder season, oak, beech, locust when it's colder. I think most of us sort by heat value.

I am just a newbie here, haha. I don't know any other woodaholics (wood heating professionals save one) personally so assumed that sorting by heat value was overkill. Apparently not! Feels good to read the various replies. Guess I am not so unusual.

Welcome to the club! :handshake: Yeah, you'll fit right in. :loco: :D

Couldn't agree more about the tv. The one in my living room bit the dust a couple years ago now I think. Haven't missed it enough to replace it I guess. Fire is way better. :fire:

[EDIT] Or should I say, much gooder. ;)

Nope! Thats normal...crazy, but normal...I usually start the year with all the uglies and unstackables, then go to the lower btu stuff and work my way up to the good stuff.
You'll fit in just fine here at FHC. Welcome to the club, Brett.

I guess I'm a bit spoiled, I don't sort my wood I just leave the junk in the woods and bring home the good stuff. Now with that said I will at times set some pieces off to the side and bring in some oak, locust, hickory, you get the picture.....welcome aboard Brett pull up a log (don't have to be hardwood) and sit a spell, we like all burners and hoarders......softwood, hardwood, pallets, 2x4's, coal, tires....
