I lucked out this entire summer. Generally I will have to at least take in the feeders at night and I did during the spring, but for the rest of the summer I left it out. It was taken down only once and even then I am not totally sure it was a bear.

    On other years though....

Heating guy was here this morning to clean and inspect the oil boiler. This time I stayed home to go over concern areas on the 22 year old Weil Mclean.

He did confirm and showed me a spot on the water jacket gasket that is likely the culprit of some minor leak I saw mid winter. It has been dry since spring but its there and a common spot for these boilers.

At the same time he said that it doesnt look like a huge problem and he has had much worse go several more years-in his words-these boilers are some of the toughest he works on. Although he is the one that I would buy from and have installed if replaced he isnt trying to sell me, just inform me. In reality he doesnt think it needs to go yet and likely has some good time left in it. At the same time, you never know.

I have been trying for 2 weeks to find someone who will come out and clean/service my boiler then start up the pilot light (it blew out last spring and I just turned off the gas). Either they won't go that far "this time of year" (we are talking 25 miles), or the locals don't answer their phone (and no answering machine), or they don't answer emails, or they don't call back from messages left on voice mail. I swear that you would think I was a leper when it comes to getting any kind of tradesman to be even remotely interested in working for me.

And mind you, I'm not asking for a quote, or a price - I just want to set up a day in the next couple of weeks where they come do their thing and I give them money. Is that too much to ask?

EDIT: Yes, I realize it is their busy time of year - that is why I let them know I'm looking at a time frame of weeks since it isn't my primary heat. The least they could do would be to conatact me and say "no". Instead, it is radio silence (except for the guy 25 miles away).

You might not want them to know its not your primary heat until they get there. Also have you tried talking with anyone at a heating supply shop to try and get a reference?

Well, I figure if I don't tell them that it isn't my primary heat supply, then they will expect me to be available at any time, at the drop of a dime, to have them come in. That is not the case (nor possible) - I need to plan to be away from the office and work quite a distanced away, so even if I am able to get out of work, I cannot be home in a few minutes because some time just opened up.

Heating supply shop - good one  . The closest ones are called Aubuchon and TSC. The closest actual supply shop is 25 miles away so I'm guessing that they will be hard pressed to recommend someone that is willing to travel that far "this time of year". I have consulted BBB, and even those company's rated A++ don't bother answering.

Wet here yesterday and last night is was windy.

Big storm shows up tomorrow night with possible hurricane force winds.

Not happy about the wind thing.

Last night over at Astoria it was clocking at 100 mph

That chit can mess up the area right quick.

    Fire on.

Spoke with the nut shell plant manager and we are good to go this coming week to start getting shells.

He said they would be processing late this year as opposed to last year when it was all done by the end of December

We will be able to pace ourselves instead of having to hurry.

Have you tried looking on Craig's List under "Services - Household"? Just a thought.
