Mulberry for sure. Whenever I run into I try to save some to make hammer handles. It's beautiful. Someday I'll do an axe handle out of it
It smells phenomenal when burning, almost has a cotton-candylike scent. It makes a great smoking wood for meats and cheeses, too!!
Red Mulberry...great wood but as noted will pop and crack and sometimes small embers end up jumping out on the floor. I don't leave the stove door open long. Pretty stringy at times when splitting.
Got a load of Mulberry a couple months back and came here to ask the same questions. Scotty said to burn a splinter and see if it smelled like cotton candy. It does burn sweet. This is just part of the load. Got about two cord from that tree.
One more question since your all so helpful.....Obviously the topic of pine being good or bad will always be a debate....is it worth getting and splitting and using? I hear it has high sap content and burns messy??? Ok plz help.
When I lived in Wyoming, Pine was about all I could get. Now that I live where there are fine hardwoods I am more picky. Pine creates a lot of creosote so I don't burn it in the Midwest where I live now.
We avoid pine because the old lady has an alergy, but we do burn any lumber scraps that come our way. Its the cutting and splitting she can't handle.
Here is some Mulberry I cut the other day that had fell earlier this year at the farm. I had not paid much attention to it because there is some Basswood right in that area and I was thinking it was one of those that had fell. Gary
I must not have taken pics of the sap. When my arborist friend cut the tree, it bled white milky sap. Here some splits from it.
Like any other wood, it needs to be thoroughly dry or it will leave a lot of Creosote in the chimney. Dry pine will burn hot and fast, the dried sap is almost like burning lamp oil. If you burn it in a stove with some kind of secondary combustion, there will be little to no creosote, as long as its dry.
