I use a 1/4"x1" (about) flat fiberglass "stick" that was used to mark underground utilities. I cut it at 26" and it stays in my left hand and get's gripped on the handle even while cutting. I just hold it on the log to measure, "eyeball" that spot and cut it, repeat. I used to just grab a good straight twig and use the same method, but this f/g stick is bright yellow and easy to see.

DexterDay those stacks are rediculously clean and tidy.

Thanks to all for their input. I will play around with some these ideas when I get back in the woods.

I made one up for marking the bigger stuff as sometimes the mass throws me off when doing 30" and bigger stuff.

The making of it is towards the end of this pic album.

I cut everything to 20" lengths. My OWB can handle much larger pieces but my wife and kids generally can't, so I keep the wood smaller. I get two rows on a 40 x 48 pallet, and my splitter can only go up to 24"anyway. I have 20" marks made with a wide tip permanent marker on my saw, and I simply rotate the saw, eyeball the cut lengths and cut. No crayons, chalk, paint, markers or anything else. I have to cut a dozen or so before I just get used to the cut length, normally I'm not off by more than 1" or so. I'd rather err on the side of too short than too long. I also find that my mind deceives me sometimes, and I tend to cut smaller diameter wood too short and large-diameter wood too long. Anytime it's over 16-18" diameter I have to measure each cut with the marks on the saw. My larger saw bars, I just mark the bar at 20".

So it is mounted in a way that would allow you cut wood without taking it off.

Right. But it's quick and easy to remove if it does get in the way. I was in Germany when I shot that video (it was a beautiful Husky 353 for all you saw-heads out there...)and unfortunately I have not found that product for sale anywhere here in the US. Not even online.

I read here a year ago or so another member marks logs before cutting. It was like a lumber crayon or spray paint or similar.

We always used a piece of clothes line rope tied to the rear handle of the saw at the length you wanted for firewood. Stretch it out, make the cut.
