Not sure which topic other than Everything Else that this topic should land in. This Saturday, I planned to clean the chimney. Unfortunately my day would not permit this. The boss overruled me with the need to install a replacement microwave. Which I ended up completing on Sunday. Sunday was a washout for us. It rained most of the night Saturday into Sunday and until 5pm on Sunday. A constant rain. We did need the rain. This coming Saturday, I'll be putting up the ladders and getting on the roof to clean it out. It's an older brick and flu chimney. My son is starting a new job on Saturday, and my dad will help me. He'll foot the ladder for me to get on the roof and then go down and monitor the clean out. Anyone else getting ready to clean out their chimney?
I clean up and mothball my stoves and chimneys at the completion of the burn season. Chimneys get a cursory sweep mid way thru the burn season although 3 year plan wood negates any kind of build up with the exception of the top 2 ' of chimney. With the unpredictable fall weather, it's nice not to have to worry about it then.
I neglected to clean out the stove last spring, but I did clean the pipe. Just for good measure, I cleaned again before I started burning back in mid-Sept. I'll probably get back up there about the first of Jan., or whenever the January thaw happens. Probably in January.
My chimney guy is coming this week , interested to see how much he gets out of it this year as this is the 1st year since replacing the wood burner with the pellet burner , using the same SS lined tile and block flue . It doesn't look to dirty , but for peace of mind have the pro check it out .
Cleaned mine a few weeks ago and did my Dad's last week. My setup takes only 10-15 minutes to clean since it's lined, super easy. I don't need to disconnect the stove, I just remove the ceramic baffles, let everything fall in, replace the baffles, and done. Well seasoned wood is the world's best kept secret though to make chimney cleaning a breeze!
This was my first year with the sooteater and I'm very pleased. Typically a chimney sweep would come in once a year but the cost of the sooteater tools was actually less than the sweep. My liner can now get cleaned 2x a year for 0 dollars.
I cleaned the chimney yesterday when I saw what some of the overnight temps were going to be this week. I'll be lighting my first fire shortly. Don't want to wake up with it under 60F in here.
Yes sorry liner. To my knowledge the flu is not damaged. However; it would give a better sense of ease knowing it's lined.
My flu is damaged, hence it's lined. Previous owner had a chimney fire, ironically. Guess they didn't know what they were doing. Article is still online: The Daily Gazette - Google News Archive Search On a good note, that wooden framed chimney is now all masonry on the outside and relined since some of the flu bricks cracked, and I'm the benefit of a very overbuilt house now since the guy really splurged with his insurance settlement, apparently. Still some weirdness in the electrical wiring (random sub panel for new wired part of house) but nothing I can't handle.
I gave my chimney a scrub a month? back when the weather was nice. The hardest part of my clean out is removing the baffles.
Update chimney all cleaned , he got a good amount of ash out , it's a 30' flue , no creosote , good to go for another season .
