Getting some heavy rains from Hurricane Matthew; not a lot of strong winds this far north but still rather breezy. Stacks are getting some rain as it blows against them; some of the covering is blow over a bit. I should have dug the sweet potatoes but I caught a rather nasty cold. The garden is going to be muddy as heck so it will have to dry a bit before I can get in and dig them. Problem is that the rain may cause them to split; still frost is a ways off yet so may leave them to heal before digging. I had the last roof vent needing to be replaced, went up and uncovered it to replace it then got sick and not able; now worried that I may get some leaks there; don't really feel up to getting wet trying to cover it now so may wait and see. Question is, what is that one following Matthew going to do; will they meet up to party?

OK, I take that back, winds are blowing hard at times. I was hoping that the winds would be mild this far north of the hurricane and it is going to get closer.

Wind and rain, Well, if you have to endure it, hope for the best. Maybe the wind and rain will give you some blow down. Free wood that you don't have to worry about the dropping of the tree. Just "try" to stay away from widow makers. Those darn trees are too tricky. Not worth it unless they can be taken down without someone getting hurt. At least you have that old tractor to pull thing with.

Over 9 inches of rain here today and I am 140 miles inland from NC coast. Flooding all over central and eastern North Carolina, it's creating a lot of hardship for many people.

Gosh, stay safe. I don't have the rain gauge out so not sure here but it is wet. I thought I would be too far north and west but the rain bands extended out pretty far.

I am thinking we have somewhere around 5 or 6 inches at least, not sure. I have one of those digital rain gauges but did not put it out; not even sure if the batteries are good. I know the buckets sitting out are getting full.

Well Madam Maths Scientist.....what is the volume of one of those buckets? Using the mystical math calculations of University attained knowledges, you ought to be able to interpolate an instance of total hydro accumulated columnar quantities......
    Just sayin.....:D

It has stopped raining but it is chilly outside. I have yet to inspect the chimney or flue. Stopped at Lowe's to see if they had the soot eater and could not find it. Never got an answer from the guy that said he did not like his; thought he might sell to me. So I still need to get something to clean the chimney.

You didn't burn too much last winter, IIRC.....is there really a need, or did what you burned last season leave a mess?

I don't know. I was going to take the cap off but I was having issues; the section below the cap wanted to turn on me. I do know it is a lot cooler here today.

Yes, the torch I had did not shine that far, I need some new D cells for the good one. At the tee I had some dry soot. I wanted to see what it looks like at the top because I figured that would be where the most build up because the gases would have cooled more there; is that correct?

Yes, worst creosote buildup would be at the top because it's cooler.

Definitely inspect the chimney. Who knows what build up you have or what critter made a temporary home in there. Drill heavy duty plastic whip or a viper from the bottom up would be best.

I may order one of the soot eaters; they seem to have good reviews. Pricey but most things are these days. Maybe I can get a gift card on ebay to help with the cost.
