I think the HF splitter has 37 hours on it now. It has been doing good. I have 2 complaints with it. 1. bark and pieces of wood get trapped in the beam and pack in there. So it needs periodic cleaning. The other thing is, I wish it was faster. With 2 people and the right size wood you can do a cord an hour with it but I get tired of waiting on the wedge. I've thought about a bigger pump since I got it. a good pump is cheap, like $150. If I put a pump on it with more though the hydraulic tank won't be big enough and the return hose is too small. So it would not really be a simple swap.

I have always drooled over kinetic splitters because they are so fast. After months of thinking I ordered a Split Second splitter today. I guess the HF splitter will be finding a new home.

I think it is going to be tough to sell. I keep it in the garage sometimes. Customers come in and look at then I tell them it splits both directions but most of them don't get it. Then 90% ask "does it stand up?" Then "They tell me theirs stands up." Most people don't understand the benefit of a dual direction splitter. They would rather have a box store vertical/ horizontal, that is slow and not as user friendly.

Once I get my Split Second I going to compare it to the HF splitter. I am going to see how long it takes to split 5 rounds with each splitter. I wish I could find someone with a vertical horizontal to add to it. Next time someone tell me their "splitter stands up" I'm going to tell them to bring it over.

Next time ask them if it has legs to stand on or what it uses to support itself

I sold my HF splitter Sunday. It had a little over 38 hours on it and close to 25 cords through it. The only breakdown I had was the tongue breaking when it was new due to some bad welds. The bigges downfall to this splitter is the beam is open and bark and wood chips fall down in the beam. The cylinder packs the bark at both ends and it has to be periodically cleaned out. If you are splitting rotten wood or wood with bark falling off it may need cleaned out every 2-3 cords. If the bark is not falling off the wood you might get 5 cords out of it before cleaning. The engine always started easily and ran great. If you are looking for a splitter to do 5-10 cords a year this would be a good splitter. If you are looking to do more and want an inexpensive splitter you may want to look into the brave 2 way splitter because you won't want to be wasting time cleaning out the beam. 20 Ton Dual Split Horizontal Log Splitter - PCLS2013GC | Brave It is identical to basod 's and he does not have problems with it getting clogged up with chips. It is also similiar in design to a Splitfire.

Here is the thread on my new splitter. I am sure most of you have seen it.

I paid $737 with tax for it then $96.94 truck freight. Then it was full of ATF, I added the hourmeter, toolbox holder, and 4" lift. I probably had around $900 in it. I think I did good since I got 38 hours of use out of it. I have seen it on sale for in the $600 range but I can't remember exactly how much. I have not been paying much attention to harbor freight sales recently. It has probably been a couple of months since I was at HF and I did not buy anything then.

The guy that bought it did not care about anything I had added to it. If I lost $180 on it cost me $4.73 an hour. I sold enough wood with it so I did not loose anythig.

I still have the 4 way. I had a lot of time in making the wings for version 1. I the made version 2 wings a lot faster.
