Not as old as I thought it might be, then. I've got an 039 that must be like 30 yrs old. It's on the injured reserve...some kind of air leak.

That is what I cut this weekend, dead on the ground but a lot of good solid wood where it was not touching the ground. It was a bit tough with the Echo. Heavy wood too. Glad to know that it is worth my trouble. Most of the locust on the property is dead so I think I will hunt it down and salvage as much as possible.

the more locust I cut, the more I like it. Like you found out, it's tough stuff and not very friendly on chains. Most of it splits great - straight grain wood.

This was my locust pile a few weeks ago...it's CSS now. A few ash logs in front, but the rest is locust.

Black Locust won't rot except the thin ring of sapwood, even touching the ground. Honeylocust, I don't know. Now, if you were to post some pics... :)

Yes, might be honey locust; not sure so much rot as insects eating away. I will take some photos later.

I drove by this morning and it looks like I lost out on the rest of it. I've just been too busy to get to it. :(

Yeah, I've occasionally seen ants in the core of BL. You will sometimes see rotted cores in some BL. I'm not sure what causes it but usually if you keep cutting on the log you will get out of the center rot and back into good wood. In my pic above you can see some center rot and ant damage in a couple of the bigger rounds that were near the base.
