I can't remember, it's under 4k though, which is nice for Ohio. No title, just yearly registration. Not really looking for a trade, unless it was something really in my favor.

I know about thre Maine thing. I had all the paperwork to get the title but just getting the DMV to understand what I wanted and why I didn't already have a title was a heartbreaking process.

MasterMech I'm confused with your situation
I bought a new trailer at tractor supply and they gave me a title to register it with DMV
DMV took title and money and gave me a 1 year plate with registration.
When it was time to renew I went to
    https://mainetrailerregistrations.com
all they needed was the NY registration (no title) good since NY DMV kept my title
For the same money for 1 year in NY I got a 5 year plate in Maine.

I bought a used larger single axle trailer. All I needed to do was send a copy of the hand written bill of sale to Maine
Same deal with cost vs NY and I again got 5 year plates. Never got, or needed to get, the title from NY DMV
No more waiting on NY DMV lines, cheaper by far, and 5 year plates

I bought a used tandem axle 8x14ft trailer with 7k GVWR in Alabama where they have never heard of a title for such a trailer. I not only had the paperwork from the sale of the trailer to me (from a registered business no less) but I had the certificate of origin and the original invoice from the manufacturer of the trailer to the original owner. A complete paper trail right to my door here in NY.

"Hi, I'd like to register my trailer."

    "You need a title."

"I understand. I bought the trailer in a state that does not issue titles for trailers, but I have all the paperwork showing the sale was legal, sales tax paid in Alabama. I should be able to pay the balance of the tax owed to NY, and apply for a NYS title no?"

"I can't process a title application unless you have a title signed by the previous owner."

"Alabama does not issue titles for trailers like this."

"I still can't process the transfer unless you get a title from the previous owner."

    :headbang::headbang::headbang:

So they asked for a letter of explanation from the previous owner, check.

Attempted two more times to apply for a NY title...... same story. They could not figure out how to title a trailer that wasn't "homebuilt" or brand-new.

So finally, on my 5th or 6th trip to the DMV, a very nice lady (my hero of the day for sure) flogged the hell outta her computer keyboard until she figured out how to get this thing titled. Son of a......:picard:

MasterMech wow who woulda thought? I feel your pain
    Thanks for the clarification
    I hate DMV
when I bought my used tandem 8x16' it's a Doolittle, in Saratoga ny
I just registered with old reg and bill of sale in ny
The second year I started using the Maine reg cause the year goes by so fast and with three trailers it seems very expensive and you're always re registering everything

That's messed up, what's the difference if it's new or bought from someone, seems like they could have just processed it, as if it was new

For insurance reasons, (trailer is part of a business) I did not want to register it as a "homebuilt".

I ended up registering my dump trailer in Maine also and get it inspected in NY every year. $87 for 5 years instead of $185 a year in new york.

I would have my trailers registered in Maine if we had to register trailers here in SC.

    I'm thinking about it.

I wonder if you have to live in a bordering state?

Nope. I have read a good bit on it on Tractor By Net forums. A lot of guys do it. I think some big truck companies register their trailers there. I see lots of the big trailers registed to Maine if you start looking.

I'm talking from a resident standpoint. And yep, there are a lot of comm guys with Maine plates, I have noticed that for years and always wondered why.
