New Glass Day

Breakfast is baking and I am about to pull the sashes in the living room and head to the hardware store for new panes. We currently have what is known as antique glass, so it is about 1/3 the thickness of modern glass. Hoping this will really help the draft problem in this room. I will be doing the glazing myself, recaulking around the top pane, and adding some bulb weather stripping to the bottom of the bottom pane.

 

Good thinking Grizz. Anytime windows can be tightened up is a good thing.
Drafts will kill the comfort level in a room.

Need to git 'er dun quick, before it gets too chilly. It's getting close.
Although, we were putting in my new windows in the middle of December last year.

 

Change of plans-- not removing antique glass after all. There is enough room to add an additional pane, so I am cleaning these ones up real good and making double panes.

 

Do you have enough space to have air space between the two panes?

 

Yeah, im using the lead glazing that was originally there to act as a spacer between the panes.

 

That makes things even more interesting.

 

Ok, i got all the lower panes installed. Tomorrow I will start glazing the inside of the existing upper panes, but we still need to have those panes cut.

 

Sounds like you'll get better insulation and no drafts with the double pane setup. The only thing I'd worry about is any humidity trapped between the glass. Might condense and frost in colder weather.

 

It already does that with the single pane in the cold months.
