before, I'm wondering if it's possible to do backsplash tile without putting up a backerboard like wonderboard? Is there an adhesive or mastic that can be used right on drywall? Done plenty of floor tile, but not this. What say the collective?
Sure is mastic for drywall, I put up thousands of tile tub enclosures, most of them being on drywall, we got our mastic from our supplier 5 gallon buckets, I'm sure they have it at the Depot in smaller size, put it on with a V notched trowel
Premixed Thinset will do it. It's acrylic based and sticks very well. Glued tiles to vinyl flooring with it.
HDRock, got it. We do it all the time on our kitchen remodels. Usually, the tile is very small and has a backer material and the mastic give you a few minutes to dial things in place. Start at the countertop and work your way up. any imperfections can be "hidden" under the wall cabinets.
Used the same on our kitchen backsplash in the old house eight years ago, still holding strong. I did texture the (painted) drywall by scoring it with a utility knife first to give a little tooth to it.
Yeah the mastic is sticky enough to hold the tile and you can line up your joints without it falling off moving it around. Those little tiles we called Hobby tile, come in sheets like 12" never like putting that on walls, put a lot of it on Floors though. First thing Dave, check for level to see how you need to proceed, I have put tile in bathrooms when the tub was half inch or better off level
Thanks guys, we'll see how we proceed. Some backsplash, Installing the oulets, trimwork, plumbing the double sink, and I think we're done.
I can see where you might want to do that, but we never did, in new homes or apartment buildings. I'm not up on everything they do nowadays, I haven't done tile work in many many moons.
I may have mis-spoke when talking about tile. What our son chose is similar to this Aspect Subway Matted 4 in. x 12 in. Glass Decorative Tile Backsplash in Rustic Clay (3-Pack)-A55-74 - The Home Depot I guess they're glass and on the mat/mesh backing. His are darker.
Dave, I'm pretty sure they would recommend Thinset for that. Has he asked anyone at Home Depot? We used it on tile in the shower and it held up just fine. I do think a primer coat on the Sheetrock would be a good idea, though.
Again, check tile man. recommendations. Glass tile usually has a specific adhesive so it does not show thru the tile, discolor it. the color coat on the back is not very thick.
HD, this stuff isn't peel & stick. I don't think he's got the thinset, mastic or whatever for it, so we'll end up doing the shopping for that. Asking a Home Depot person the question may result in a blank stare. I guess we'll have to resort to reading the label.
