Hello Everyone, I am moving to a new house at the end of October and will be installing an Ideal Steel. The house has an existing wood fireplace (the other side of the chimney is the garage so it's not an outside chimney) which I planned on dropping an insulated flex liner then the T to the back of the stove. However this afternoon was my home inspection and I took some measurements and some hearth adjustments need to be made. First: the hearth is raised and it only comes out 19" from the fireplace opening to the edge. The IS is 20" leg to leg. I'll have to extend the hearth out some which was expected. 2: The fireplace is only 26.5" high. Looking at the IS specs it appears that the center line for the rear vent is 24.5" with the legs at their lowest position (no ashpan) but the top of the fireplace opening would still be 1" too low. Now I'm thinking about doing one of the thimbles through the fireplace brick above the mantle and running a few feet of pipe from the top vent of the stove to a 90* angle to the thimble and then connect to a flex liner the rest of the way up the chimney. How would you guys go about this? I've attached a pic of the fireplace from the real estate listing website.
I'd rather redo the hearth if it was me. Anyway you can pull 2 layers of bricks out from under the stone piece? Then you can just attach to the flex liner for a cleaner look. Yyou could possibly use the bricks to extend the hearth. I've got an IS too. It's a beast of a stove. You need dry wood to run that cat though.
You can install the IS exhaust collar upside down and get another 1.25-1.5" lower on the centerline. I think it will work, but the pipe will be close to the lintel of your fireplace.
