I do not keep my wood under cover here. When I need some I just move it into the garage. I keep about 2 weeks worth in there. Right now I have about 4 years worth on hand.
It is all stacked nice and neat and off the ground. No rot at all. The wind is always blowing here and very low humidity. High Plains. I have thought about building some kind of wood shed because so many here use them but it is not high on my list of things to get done right now and it has not been an issue for me.
6 in for this year, 6 outside for next. All split, stacked, and plenty dry (2 years +). That is about what I have burnt the last few years.
Split, stacked, ready to burn and under roof - 10 cords. Another 6 cords are split, ready to burn behind the wood shed. And then there's the other 30 cord that will be ready the next 2 years.
Just about 3 cord over here for this year. Well, actually stacked at my parents at the moment. We won't be into our new house till mid December. So I figure it will be just about the right amount. And then I have 4x- 4 cord rows all stacked and drying at various stages of age. My wood this year will be all red oak.
6 cords ready to burn under roof. Another 6 cords under roof but probably not ready until spring. Another 6 cords under roof in reserve, supposed to be for '17-'18. I'm theoretically all set for my 3-year plan, but practically I'm way behind as most of next winter's wood and the following, is still laying on the ground in tree form, waiting to be bucked, hauled, split and stacked.
Since I've installed a gas stove in my basement my wood consumption has dropped by almost a cord. I store a little over two cords in my shed for the season to heat my main floor with my Keystone. Probably have 7 or so total on hand.
I've got 3 cords of ash and silver maple ready to go, most if which is left over from last years mild winter. That should be more than enough for me, but I've got another 3 cords of mostly oak that's been split and stacked for 2 years on standby. Then there's probably 6 cords of ash in rounds that I need to get to splittin' once it cools down some more.
It's this will be our first winter burning and we've been working hard for right about a year trying to get wood dried out. We're not even close to where I think we need to be. We've got 1.6 cords that's reading 15-19% on a freshly split face and a further 1.7 cords that's reading 20-22% on a freshly split face. I'm hoping the second row (the 1.7 cords) will dry out enough to use but I have no idea if it can drop 3-5% in just a couple of months as we go into fall. Finally, we've got another 1.5 cords stacked within the last month that's reading about 45% (but the meter warns me that it's inaccurate that wet). Since this is our first year burning, I have no idea if the 1.6 dry cords plus the 1.7 cords that might be dry in time are going to be enough to make it through the winter. Beyond that, I'm not sure how we're ever going to be able to keep up with rate we're burning if we've only managed to CSS 4.8 cords in a little over a year. I would assume we'll burn at least that over a full winter. Even more worryingly, about 60% of our flat ground is now covered with firewood and I have no clue where I'm going to stack year 2 and 3 on the "3 years ahead" plan.
williaty If you mix those 1.6 and 1.7s together you will be just fine! Nothing wrong with 20%! Just remember to keep an eye on the top of your chimney about once a month. It may dry a tad over winter but not enough to wait I don't think. Remember that you technically take 3 readings on a split ( end, middle, and other end) and average it to get a better overall MC.
Hmmm ... the reply button seems to not be working right, it is not copying the original message to the reply box. At least here. Grizzly Adam ? williaty , you are doing great! Keep at it, you will get where you want to be. You can stack on a slope as well.
I am envious, but getting there, just built my woodshed this year which will hold 6 full cord, only burn about 2.5 full cord a year. Had this years fuel bucked all summer and getting split now, moistures are around 30%, except for oak, setting that aside for future years. Will then split and fill other half for 2017/18 fuel and hopefully get the 2018/19 bucked and beside the shed to be split in the spring. Getting there.
Every time I go to upload file, nothing happens, will have to try from desktop. Built the shed with a clear roof and slats on the side, was hoping to get away from stacking outside then moving to shed. Live on a hill with almost steady breezes.
Almost 2 cords, but I have a source for more for this year. The rest of my wood is still in the mid 20's so it will wait for next year.
In the process of moving the last of a short 2 cords to the house. Have more if needed, but 2 cords is about our average usage.
This will be the winter of silver maple shorties (3+ cord) in the day and white oak (1+ cord) at night. If I get tired of burning all the short pieces, I have at least 8 cord of regular sized wood that I could use if needed.
Usually thats due to phones taki g HUGE pictures. Scaling down the resolution before uploading solves that.
