All my wood is split and will be stacked by weeks end. I should be right about at three year plan level. So time to take a break right? Wrong! No self respecting hoarder is going to rest on his laurels like that. Especially when I have these two standing dead BTU holding vessels right in my own backyard.

This first one I think is a long dead oak, it might be a hickory though. I've been eyeing this bruiser up for a couple of years now. It's probably 60 to 70 feet tall. The problem was that it had a crown of large branches, potential widowmakers, at the very top that protruded from the trunk in all directions and I couldn't get a sense of which way it wanted to fall. Over the last few years all the branches have fallen but one. The first picture is looking at it from the east and the second is from the north. Should be pretty straight forward now.

The second tree can be seen on the right side of the first picture but here's another picture of it. I don't know what kind of tree it is . I has a spiral grain to the trunk. Any ideas? I'll post more and hopefully clearer pictures when I get them down.

It's hard to tell from my phone, but is there a widow maker up to there?

Like you said. Standing BTU holding vessels. Should make for some great firewood.
If you want them to fall a certain direction then pull them over. I use a winch attached to another tree.

For me, if it's not near the house or main trail, I would leave it.

Your last picture almost looks like dead elm. I have some that look like that.

The big tree is right on the edge of my rifle range. If it falls to the north east it'll take out my horse pasture fence. The smaller tree is right off a five foot wide "fire road".

I'd cut them both. Around here they get overtaken by poison ivy if you let them go too long plus you can only drool so long over seeing the standing cords haha

The first tree is down. My pictures came out better this time.

    Straight up the trunk.

It bends a little but not too bad.
    012.JPG

First thing I did was clear around the base and cut out a "getaway". You can't see it that well but it goes off towards the right.

The stick in the foreground is my line.
    013.JPG
    Nailed it!
    017.JPG
The widowmaker still caught the fence but no damage done.
    018.JPG
The only thing I was worried about was if the stump was hollow and the base exploded when I made my notch. I made my cuts higher hoping to be above any rot.

Turns out to be solid oak all the way down!

The second tree came down this afternoon. It got hung up so I had to cut the trunk a second time . I'm thinking its a red maple. The first tree was about 24" in diameter the second was 15". 082.JPG 079.JPG

It was a good work out today for the MS461 on the first tree and the MS391 on the second.
