    The one well anyway.....

Dawn and I worked on making the well a little more nice looking and to keep the little dog, Saucy from getting into it.

    Before.......

just an unsightly death trap for Saucy.........

    After.......

We framed the opening, I built a door, and rode around picking up rocks from all over. 20160925_143933.jpg

Any woman needs to put her finishing touches on a project.

    Here lies "The Well"

Maybe for irrigation since it's near the field I'll eventually prep for planting. The other well is really nice, and I plan on adding a cover or housing of some sort with a manual pump. This is the area I'm now starting to clear. There's just not enough time in the day when juggling so many projects. In a few minutes, I will insulate around the main well pump that feeds the house in the crawl space.

While insulating, I was trying to figure out why the lamps wouldn't turn on that keep it a little warmer around the pipes and pump. New light bulbs, check.... plugged in, check....... switches on, check.....

I unplugged everything and finally figured out that the outlet had a thermostat on it....COOL! I wish I knew these things were invented back at the other house! No more turning on at night and turning off during the day. When temps decline, lights turn on! I'm sure Backwoods Savage already knows of these things, but what a convenience.:yes:I'll still need to check the bulbs aren't burned out though.

Also need to be aware led bulbs don't give off the heat like the old light bulbs. That could be a problem.

I hoarded some standard bulbs, but I use them for similar situations. You can find small heat bulbs thatll work.

I always heard from my grandfather to never fill in a good well.
They can be dangerous (don't fall into any other unknowns)but the finished work looks good!

My thought as well Dennis and Boomstick.
My wife just got some new guineas, and her old bulb stopped working, so she needed a new one. They're still available, but few and far between, and won't be around too much longer.
I bought her a 4 pack, and should have grabbed 3-4 of them.
Well Seasoned , it's good that you thought enough to insulate the pump pit/house.
My SisIL has had her line freeze twice, and that was during last winters mild (comparatively) weather.
I think she got around to adding some more insulation and put in a hotter bulb for this winter.

Hope the wood isn't PT. You don't want chemicals leaching into the well water. If it is PT. consider putting on some plastic on the back or find some way to seal the wood with some none toxic coating so it won't leach through into the water. Just my 2 cents of precaution.

Exactly. You need a halogen, or at least an old school filament bulb to make the heat.

LEDs make little heat at all. CFL bulbs make a little more, but you want the old tech in this case.

I use a 100w bulb in the dog house of my ski boat to keep it all happy when it gets to freezing temps overnight before I winterize it with RV antifreeze and still can use the boat.

I hoarded enough of those bulbs, yes they are getting harder to find, and I think I'll get more when I see them. I also have a thermometer wire fed down there with the screen by the back door with an alarm. If a bulb goes out, I'll know ahead of time.

Now, to freak out your guests, all you need to do is make up a headstone that reads something like "Here lies Hatchet Jack.......he kilt the bear that kilt him...."
