Gotta be close to a cord there. One good tree, the rest have marginal centers. It got to 20°, & the fog rolled in, blocked any heat from the sun. May get the splitter going if the forecast is right, 32° for Monday. The ground is like cement now, got real wet then froze solid. Need snow cover, to save the new grass around the stacks.

Nice score Dave! Love the look of birch logs.. Some birch around here but not a lot.. For some reason birch grows well in the cold climates.. My brother and sister in law live in northern NH and they have loads of birch there.. Problem with birch is you have to cut and split it fast or it rots even while standing dead for a short time.. Must be the waterproof bark that keeps the moisture in.. I've seen oaks and locust dead for eons that are still solid.. Ray
Same here for our birch. I dropped a couple dead ones, with no tops or limbs, punky throughout , frozen compost inside the watertight bark As soon as you see dead or dying limbs in the birch tree tops, you know its starting to rot in the center. I saved rounds with at least 50% good wood, I'll get some good splits & some waste . All but 1, of the ones I cut were starting to rot in the center. Still lots of good wood, just have to split the punky stuff off when I split. Got lots of fire pit wood from the limbs. Had fun & got some exercise.
Hold on Dave. I've heard that winter may come to Alaska yet; just not sure when. Maybe during the Iditarod.
Yea we have 2 to 3 months of winter left Anything could happen, clear-& cold-way below zero, lots of snow or another shot of warm air. I'd like #2 , lots of snow
Should get a cord + of good wood when all split & stacked. Some previous pictures show the hollow rounds. All of them have some center wood dying. This is the base of the best one, up about 4 rounds it was solid. This one will have some punky parts that go to the compost pile
Nice job! I sure wish I could get some cutting in........... Went from -20 and 12+inches of snow to 58 and 6 inches of mud.... I can't even walk across my back yard and up the hill.
I hear ya cert.. was over 50 here today and getting muddy.. Now they are talking snow monday, wednesday and saturday lol.. Might get rain, ice or sleet though! Gonna be fun commuting this week..again
BD, you are an animal. I am a little envious. My RA is cickin my butt this winter and havent gotten much cut.
Thanks SM. I won't quit until I can't rope and drag one split into the house. Thank God for my Son who has vowed that as long as I live and can drag wood in and put it in my stove, he will make sure I have wood to burn.
