So, my fiancé is on a business trip. I bush hog a few acres this am, read the paper, watch a little football, go for a 5 mile walk, watched a little more football, and realized I hadn't ate.

Now I can fix myself food, but I didn't feel like it. Decided I would go the local convenience store and get a sub sandwich-it's about 4 miles from my house, and is about the only place to go-although I rarely go there-there seems to always be someone there that wants to talk school-I am a Middle School principal.

I stand in the front of the counter for several minutes, until finally a clerk tells me "Hon, if you want to order something, you have to use the touch screen there." A touch screen to order food?

Now, I am not a techie, but I am posting this from my Smartphone, use Word to write all my reports at work, send and receive probably 200 e-mails a week at work, and even can get phone calls and texts when I am in my truck or car.

But order a sandwich on a touch screen?!?! There were 3 clerks and 4 customers in this store. I told here "ok", walked out and drove to a village 10 miles away to get my sandwich, where a pretty young lady took my order and complimented me on my Browning T-shirt!

Does this mean I am a cantankerous old fart? Am I now a Luddite?

    Yeah ,,,, maybe.
I'm on the road 6 days a week and max out my hours of service daily .
I'm usually by 1 of 5 awesome delis/pizza shops around the noon hour. The last few years it seems to me people have really become hard to deal with. Nearly daily I would get behind 6-10 people in line and at least one had to give the order taker a hard time ,,, taking up my time. It got so bad that the sandwich makers would get my attention in line and ask if I wanted the usual and I would nod my head . 15-20 minutes of waiting in line for indecisive jaghoffs to order I would get to the front to pay and boogie.
2 months ago I got fed up with waiting in line and bought a 12v fridge for the truck and stock it once a week at a grocery store where I stand in line less time for people checking out a whole cart full than at a deli sandwich line.Life is good !
I'll take a touch screen any day over waiting for indecisive jaghoffs. I feel your pain man.
Maybe , just maybe I'm a cranky old man too.

You rebel, you! Keep that up and you will wind up in the principal's office. You paid the price of boycotting that self ordering device by driving 10 miles to get it your way. But, look at it this way, you got it with a smile! Grumpy old man, not hardly. Not old enough. Just being a rebel and acting out. Another time, if you don't want to drive that 10 miles again. call in the order! Have it waiting for you.

I walk out lots of times when I think things are not going right for the shopper. I have even just left the cart right where it is. (nothing to spoil) and walk out. But I don't get upset about it. Their loss, and I haven't driven myself into a heated frenzy being frustrated. Heck, it is up the management to staff the store and be responsible for the performance of the employees. If I am still feeling out of sorts when I get home, I simply send off a "letter of concern" to the management of the business. What usually happens is I either get a call, or they send my some discount coupons.

My wife and I took my mother-n-law to a local pub a few years back now. Their computers were down so they informed us things were slow. I've worked in numerous restaurants through the years, and most did not have a computer system to place your orders. Amazingly, we were able to take the orders, get them correctly to the cooks, and deliver their food in the usual amount of time. It floored me that a computer being down would grind their food operation to a complete halt.

If you crotchety, I am right there with you.

 :lol:exactly. While I work in the tech field day in and day out, I relish that I learned to do my calculations and work without computers. Even today, I'll find that nothing beats a written down design or report.

Well, it's great to know I am not alone! I still pay cash for take out food, haircuts, and the occasional drink in a bar. I file my own taxes, and have made piece with the electronic filing-although I would still be doing the paper form if I could. I write checks to pay my bills-I'm not giving anyone authorization to access my accounts. My paycheck is direct deposit-only because the school's bank and mine are the same.

Thats old school ordering at the deli and theres nothing wrong with you...I'd have been looking for the same thing, a person to take my order.
It's kinda sad actually, how much the digital age has taken over for person to person business. Same thing with drive-up windows, in times we live
in now it's so fast paced that it sucks. I rarely use the drive up, I still get out and walk in and get what I'm looking for. Maybe I'm the weird one here

Right on. Years ago when my wife was running the bakery she hired a couple young ladies fresh out of high school. Neither of them could make change unless the machine told them how much to give. What? Fresh out of high school and can't make change? Twas difficult to believe but I had to believe it.

For sure. I can't see getting to a drive-up and sitting there idling the car and wasting gas when I can shut the car off and walk in. Such a waste.
