That's a nice deal. Be nice to have something like that around here.
We collect as much stuff as possible (non-hazardous), and recycle.
There's a drop-off going in either direction we normally travel for shopping, so we take it with us and drop it off on the way. Usually a full 30 gallon trash bag (compacted) every couple weeks. It's amazing how much crap we've kept out of the landfill/dump.

Not only do we have the weekly trash trucks, but we also have the weekly recycle trucks. That is nice and it also kicks back a few dollars to the township. On the hazardous stuff, we do have several times during every year when we can take it to a drop off site and the same goes for old tires. Wednesday this coming week is the last day for them to take old pain, stains, etc.

thewoodlands , I read the notice and it looks like thats a good deal if you have some stuff that collects over time or in your case from cleaning out
    the house.

Question, why does latex paint in liquid form have to be made solid and thrown away and oil based paint can be sent in as is?

Oil based can be recycled . Latex goes into the landfill. If it's in liquid form and a landfill compactor runs over it and the can explodes all over a worker or garbage truck,(I've actually seen it happen) the landfill is liable for cleanup. You can use sawdust , kitty litter or dry sAnd to dry it up then just throw it out with your regular trash.

We used this for the Latex paint, after mixing it up we left it under cover to dry for a week, it works great.

Latex and water-based paints are water soluble and are not considered hazardous. Paint hardeners, cat litter or sawdust may be added to left over latex paint in order to solidify the unused product. The lid may also be left off to speed up the drying process. Once dried it may be disposed of with your regular trash.

The above is from the HHWD in Ohio, I'm sure it's the same reason in NY.

All the paint we collect , several times a year we will mix up a 5 gallon pail and paint the inside walls of our dumpsters with a mop. Random colors mixed in a 5 gallon pail makes for some interesting color schemes!
