Found this in the town's community compost/mulch dump. Not sure what it is but it's free Btu.

Ding-ding-ding-Winner, winner chicken dinner...looks like red oak to me...does it smell sublime? Red oak smell is like the smell of the circus...you either love it or hate it...smells like elephants marching into the arena? Nice rounds regardless if I'm wrong, it is hardwood and looks a bit seasoned already by the crackling of the grain in the pics=Nice score:yes:

The more I look at it, the more I think it's cottonwood.

    Cottonwood stinks.......definitely not red oak.

Sassafras has almost a lemony smell.

Looks a lot like chestnut oak, it will have an almost vanilla-like smell if it is.

But I'm fairly certain that what you have is cottonwood.....

With the big furoughs and ridges in the bark and dark heart and light sapwood, and without a smell test, it looks alot like cottonwood we find here in WI. It will have a really strong musty odor and stringy texture when you split it.

My first guess was and still is Cottonwood. I'll try and get a close up of the end grain this evening VW. Thanks all that have chimed in.

I've cut a lot of this wood this year. Seems to be very wet when you split it. I always wondered what kinda wood it is. Cottonwood is the general consensus?

I'll vote for cottonwood too although it is understandable that one could also take that for sassafras. It certainly would smell different! I still say that sassafras is the sweetest smelling wood out there.

My vote is cottonwood as well, I've burned my share fair if it. It burns way quick, good shoulder season wood though. I've found it is best to get it covered as soon as it's split, it seems to soak water up real quick. Nice rounds though, it will make heat:dex:
