If you don't feel comfortable taking it down, just leave it there until you're more confident in your abilities, or have help from a more experienced person. I don't know if oak has a tendency to rot on the inside as a dead standing tree or not, but poplar (as an example) does for sure, and you'll see things can go haywire in a hurry.

I went to my sister's house; the dead tree on the ground was a tulip poplar; it may still be good wood; will tell more when I split it. It was a big tree.

Risky business cutting a dead tree. Those falling branches like to take out a tooth or two once you get hit by them. May not realize it until you regain consciousness though.

Be sure you know what you're doing! Not worth the risk at all!

Don't chance it but at the same time, the "friend" you've been waiting on all summer...well:whistle:-pay someone---I know lots of guys that would take 10-15 seconds to drop it for say $40-50. Then you get to play with your saw, have a nice bit of wood and all is good-You're scrounging in the 11th hour, get all the handy dead fall/small stuff and work towards next year and those thereafter...And once you've done all that is required, you can sit back and relax...The 3yr plan is not pie in the sky-it takes work and dedication-Once realized,,,have a slice of pie and warm your toes by the fire...

I make a pecan chocolate chip pie that is pretty dang good; not too sweet but sweet enough. I chop pecans to go in the pie and top it with pecan halves. Plenty of chocolate too. I also do some mean cheesecake as well. Coconut cream pies; chocolate chest pies; I love baking but don't do it much any more. I usually do my chocolate candies and magical biscuit bars at Christmas. No one visits and I end up eating it all and gaining weight. Maybe this year I need to forgo the baking.

Chess? I'm a WV boy-we play checkers...golf is worth 4 hrs, not chess...I do know some of the players though...(Rook, Bishop, Pawn, Queen, Knight) Wow that's complicated... Eric VW should be able to take that tree down, lickity split...he's not too far away right?
