Good day all. my father in law is building a small cabin on our farm for his retirement. It will be 14'x26' so around 360 square feet plus a loft that will be a bit less than half the length so high ceilings but well insulated. We are looking for a stove recommendations. He will heat exclusively with wood as the cabin will be solar powered. We are in New Brunswick, Canada if that helps. Thanks in advance
easy question not an easy answer without more information. what is budget, what burn times are hoped for how important is efficiency , what type of wood (I know just north of Maine) is available.. but short reccommnd list 1000 or less - England nc-30 or 13 2000 is - Woodstock soapstone I got one love it low end control is amazing.. Great customer service etc etc of course small blaze king..
Our 16'x22' uninsulated cabin is comfortable with a basic woodstove during the winter. I don't know what brand it is but it'll only take 16" logs.
Budget can be what ever as he just wants something he can have a long burn in to keep the place warm. He likes roughing it but hates being cold. He will be cold and I am in a T shirt and more than comfortable. I like your good, better, best approach. As for wood we have mostly softwood Spruce and White Birch so far. We have a 45 acre wood lot and have been cutting a tractor road and trail to the back of the property. It's long a narrow and we are about 1/4 of the way back. My neighbour has been out to the back and said the wood gets much bigger and some hardwood the further back you go. If we don't find decent hardwood to burn we will order a truckload of logs to buck/split and sell the extra to cover the cost. This is what he did in Ontario. We are cutting trails and fence lines for our goats and pigs so will burn what ever softwood is removed for that during shoulder seasons and through warmer days in the winter but always hardwood overnight or for extended burns. We just put a wood furnace in our place so we will be burning wood as well. I will give him his best solution for long efficient burns and if the price scares him off I will let him make the decision for what he wants to give up in order to save money. Our wood furnace was easy in the sense that not many would fit in our shorty basement and we were not going to go with a contractor we didn't trust for the Instalation. Thanks for the reply and recommendations.
Nice looking cabin! We would have the same weather as you being in Maine so that is nice see. How does it hold the heat overnight?
Hammy, my Woodstock ideal Steel heated my 2200 Sq. foot vaulted ceilings home on ash and popular all last season. easy 14 hours of heat on what I consider junk firewood (popular). I would probably in your scenario go a smaller full soapstone model.
Yeah that sounds like it will be the best case for him for sure. He's out right now but I will pitch him the idea when he gets back. I know the last cabin he had was cold in the winter and he couldn't stand it. Just want him to be as comfortable as possible. We are ordering seasoned hardwood this week as I only have about a cord cut off our property so far and it's about as wet as you get so it will wait for next year. Thanks for the input. Really appreciate it.
If it's cold (10 or less) ya gotta add to it around 1 or 2 AM (pee break) to be good by 6. Where your cabin will be fully insulated, it'll be more forgiving in the heat loss department for sure. Thx for the kind words...
Thanks for the update. He will surely want to be able to go all night without intervention. I have never known him to sleep straight through the night but a guy can dream I suppose. He seemed pretty excited when I told him of the recommendations and experiences so far. He's been doing some research online and has found some local stove shops to check out. I will keep you guys posted. Thanks!
