My old S-10 had a Cast-Iron six-banger. But it sure didn't pull like a Cummins....

Turbos work a little differently on a diesel vs a gasser. And it has to do with how a diesel controls the combustion cycle vs. how a gasser just initiates it. ;)
A word on cylinder deactivation, if you actually drive the truck, it doesn't do much at all. My '13/5.3L only operates in V4 mode when I'm coasting really. ANY amount of throttle applied and it's right back to V8 mode. Completely lift off the pedal and it actually shuts down the fuel injection. It idles in V8 mode too. '14 and up is a little more aggressive about using the V4 mode as I understand it but it's otherwise the same story. I know mine wouldn't stay in V4 on a dead-level highway with a tailwind.

I'd say they need to put an ecoboost v8 in the f250. It sounds like a coyote 5.0/ or a voodoo 5.2 with twin turbos will be powering the next gt500. If a 3.5 ecoboost in the new raptor will be 450 hp /450tq, better in all respects than the 6.2 in the old raptor, just imagine what a twin turbo 5.0 would do in a truck? Stump pulling.

With a couple of very small turbos on a 5.0 it would be very easy to get 450 reliable hp for an HD truck. The 5.0 is all aluminum so I bet they would have a iron block for an ecoboost version. I wonder how big they can go with the 3.5 ecoboost, I bet they could get some good power out of a 4.0 V6.

A twin turbo 5.2 would be sick in a GT500. I love the sound of the 5.2, the 5.0's sound really good too.

The Ford GT is supposed to have a 550hp+ 3.5 ecoboost too. It has already been kicking but on the race track.

I highly doubt it. It might sway the buyer that really doesn't need a HD Diesel pickup but then why wouldn't they go for the better riding/driving half-ton anyways?

The real reason you don't see them in a heavier chassis is just that - weight! It would have to work a little harder to move the heavier truck, which erodes its marketing advantage, MPG.

Some guys on a Ford truck forum got together and hooked different Ford trucks of different years to a trailer that weight 12 or 14k and tried them up a hill on a back road. The 6.2 gas in the superduty did about as good as the 6.7 diesel and the 3.5 was right there with the 6.7 diesel.

here it is, the trailer weighed 14,700

    2011 F-350 with 6.2 and 4.30 gears and 35'' tires

    2013 F-150 3.5 Ecoboost, 3.73 gears.

I was thinking they had a 6.7 truck there but it was an 2008 with a 6.4. The 6.2 gas is usually a couple seconds off of the 6.7PSD.

One time? Sure! And that's the difference. The test I want to see is a fleet of say, 3/4t landscaping trucks towing 10,000lb equipment trailers daily for at least three seasons and plowing snow in the winter. EcoBoost, V8, and a HD Diesel.

HP really is what does the work and it won't matter if it comes from a turbo six or a big V8. But durability/component loading is a different story, and why engines like the 5.9L Cummins get the reputation they do and last forever in a pickup.

There are plenty of youtube vids of guys with between 100 and 200k on their Ram Ecodiesels in 1 year... They are doing very well.

Yep, that is the main use of 1/2 ton 4 door trucks today. Exactly what I normally do with mine.... until I bought a Mini CooperS for commuting anyway.... ;)

If they did a 4.0 v6 or ecoboosted the 5.0 V8 they would have a winner for a HD truck. The ecoboost engine is built like a diesel.

I had a 1978 VW Rabbit with a diesel in it. It got 50 (FIFTY!!) MPG, way back then. It had a 10 gallon fuel tank, and I could go 500 miles on it. Diesel fuel was 70 cents a gallon back then. DO THE MATH!! Why the F can't we get that kind of mileage today? yea yea yea, EPA BS. Still, they should be able to do it!!

    LOL!!!

 Can you say RAMBOX??? ;)

Again, the Pre Owned Certified vehicles I've been looking at have a 7 year/100k on them. ;)

Yeah, they dominated at LeMans, do 0-60 in 3 seconds, top speed of 200 mph. Slow, huh?

There was a deductible, I can't remember exactly but it was small. Something like $200.

Gassers can do it occasionally, diesels can do it every time

EPA is partially to blame. But even more so safety crap is to blame and we just like larger cars now, both of which adds weight. My dad's 92 civic got 45 mpg but it weighed 500lbs less than a civic does today. I think the Rabbit/Golf has put on even more weight, it's around half a ton more.

The average car makes a lot more power as well, that old Civic had like 110 hp, I think the minimum now is 150.

I bet if we dropped today's engines in those cars 60-70mpg would be common.
