If you were to pay somebody to split your wood for you how would you pay, by the day, by the hour, by the cord etc... How would you pay your helper??
I'd be inclined to pay by the whole job. If it's just a young lad maybe give some of the money as he progresses through the job to keep him interested.
Had the experience one time when I shattered my elbow. Put a ad out locally saying I had 6-7 cord of blocks to be split. Young lad (early 20's) called asking if he could do the job, saying he did not have a splitter but could borrow one for a day from a friend. I told him he would need more than a day to get er' done. I asked him how much he wanted and he said he wasn't sure. I told him to come out and actually have a look before he decided his price. He showed up with Dad. They had a look and Dad suggested a $ per hour price. I told him that I was only interested in a total job price. Finally the young lad said he wanted $ 350. for the entire job and that he would get it done in one day. I agreed, but certainly thought he had bit off more than he could chew with the one day theory. So, he showed up on the agreed day full of pi$$ & vinegar and tore into the pile. Working like a mad man until about noon he had about half done by early afternoon. As the afternoon progressed, the pace slowed down as expected. By the end of the day he still had about 2 cords to go. He said he was done as his back could not take it any more. We agreed on $250. for what he had done, so I paid him. He said he would be back the following Wednesday to finish it off. I'm still waiting......................NOT.
If this is a helper working alongside you I'd pay by the hour since you can set the pace. If working alone I'd probably do a by the cord price. No idea on how much, last time I helped a farmer bale hay was probably 7 years ago and the going rate was $10/hour. It's probably up to $12-14 now and I'd say it's comparable work.
Nope, self-inflicted on his part. His eyes were writing a check his arse wasn't capable of cashing...................
I'd do it straight by the job. That way if they slow down, it is on their time and not yours. One good way to figure it is to use the time it would take you to do the job and pay accordingly.
You reminded me of one cattle farmer that paid significantly less than the others, I think it was $6.50/hour. BUT, his wife always cooked a killer lunch for us and we could drink milk straight from the dairy farm!
I can relate although that is more than I got when I was a young lad. Geeze, I remember when kids went wild if they could get $.50 or more per hour.
You left out the part about having to share a pair of shoes with my siblings and walk to school 5 miles up hill both ways.
Back about five-six years ago when the economy crapped out and I needed some cash, I posted an ad on craigslist that I would cut, split and stack your firewood for $100 per full cord. My saw, my splitter. Assuming that you got a log truck load dropped in your driveway, like so many folks around here do. Never got a single response. My kids have never gotten an allowance for anything, but I'm inclined to pay them in some manner this fall to help with the wood. Actually, they'll help no matter what, but the carrot is better than the stick. I figure a couple bucks an hour and a batch or two of homemade cookies will go a long way.
I'd do it if you were closer.....you could pay me by the day.....which works out to be about an hour and then I'm whooped.
Well, it depends upon where that house was located but the first house I bought cost a whopping $6,000! It even had a 2 car garage but I couldn't afford a second car. lol
