The saw existed for a while last year. Then was recalled (unofficially?) - and has been in hiding ever since.

The 661 really exists. Sort of. I had one ordered and when it came in the saw shop gave me the choice of keeping it or sending it back for the recall. I sent it back. I did get to see it...briefly.
As to what's wrong or why they're being recalled, nobody really knows for sure and Stihl isn't talking. There's a lot of speculation and rumor but that's really all it is. The only people that know for sure aren't sharing the information.

On the up side, they're basically a good saw and an improvement over the 660. There were some out here for a over a year being used by loggers and a couple of government agencies. They were used in real-world situations, day to day logging operations, and they weren't babied. The only instructions that the users had were to use Stihl synthetic oil, run them in stock form only, and to use them like you'd use any other work saw.
I can guarantee the saws weren't treated like anything special. They weren't abused but they weren't coddled either. The saws were run hard. The guys that were picked to trial the saws didn't get to keep them, they went back to Stihl.

That's all I can say. Be patient. The saw is worth waiting for.

So if you had kept the saw and used it would it still have been under the 'recall' -- Would you have been able to send it back when the new ones are available?

Mike, I don't know . It was "suggested and advised" that the saw go back to Stihl. I figured why take a chance. My dealer is an old time west coast saw shop and they didn't have any more information than anybody else. That surprised me because they're in pretty tight with Stihl and almost always have the inside info about what's going on.
I still have my 660 and my 066 so it's not like I'm hurting for a work saw.

I was real tempted to just grab the saw and take my chances but I didn't. My thought was...if it blows up or has problems would it still be covered under warranty? In all the years I've run Stihl I've never ever had a warranty issue.
