Fiance and i are going for a week middle of September. Anyone else spent some time there? Im not sure what to plan to do just yet..
I agree it's pretty touristy. I did have the best Margarita in my life there however. The place is called No Way Jose and it's very near the aquarium.
Yup. I went in March. The Tail of the Dragon was a nice drive. The Blue Ridge Parkway also. Cades Cove was nice. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are tourist traps.
I've been there a lot. A typical family vacation when I was young was the Smokey Mountains, and I've been back about 5 times as an adult for fishing trips. I agree Gatlinburg is sort of touristy but it's a fun place to stay at nights. Mt recommendation during the day would be the endless hiking in the national park, if you're in to that. Also miles and miles of scenic drives. Rafting and canoe trips are available as well. Or if you want even more touristy stuff head to Pigeon Forge. The Smokey Mountain Knife Works is a little less than an hour north of Gatlinburg if you want to drool over thousands and thousands of knives.
I have been there and my sister and BIL go quite often. Dollywood is nice enough especially if they have something special going on. Cade's Cove as was mentioned was nice, hike up to Laurel Falls was nice. Roaring Fork Motor Trail is another thing.
Couple more.....don't miss a good dinner at the Old Mill and a breakfast you won't soon forget at The Apple Barn.
If you are into trees . . . like we are, a short drive is the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, it has the oldest original growth trees in the east, it's really a remarkable place, easy walking and the biggest and most beautiful trees you will probably ever see. If you go, take some pics for the rest of us to see.
Cades cove is nice and you might see a bear this time of year in there. It's much easier when the leaves are off to see them.
I was at Cades Cove in 2011 and got stuck in a 'bear jam'. There was a mother bear and a cub on the side of the road that brought everything to a halt. I couldn't believe the mother bear didn't start ripping people a new azz. I'd bet people were within 20 feet of them. I've been to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge twice, once during peak summer tourist season and once in October. If I ever go back, it'll be in the fall. Summertime was way too busy for my liking.
Me and the girlfriend have been staying in a cabin outside of pigeon forge this last week. Tonight being our last night here. Thanks for the tip about the forest. Not as many large trees as my imagination was expecting but still pretty cool. Here are some pictures.
