So. I live in Florida. We have a fireplace that last winter we used 2 maybe 3 times - with firewood bought at the grocery store. But something happened this year. In May a large Southern Hackberry fell in my yard. Over the years I have hired a tree service a few times but since the tree was not near the house I decided to try to clean it up. Next thing I know I bought a chipper to process all the small stuff. I dusted off my Stihl MS 170 and started to cut i back. Quickly realized that it was over matched - so bought a Shindaiwa 591 (same as an Echo CS590). Kept cutting back when I could and then it hit me - I need a splitter so bought and Ariens 22 Ton and started splitting and stacking. My wife thinks I am crazy but its become an obsession. The Stihl was giving me grief so I bought a Shindaiwa 358T as my main small stuff saw. Kept reading this forum and realized that a 3 saw plan was in order (of course). Then I watched Cory's videos on the Dolmar PS-421, found a local dealer and added that to the quiver. Read chainsaw posts and fixed the Stihl myself. I have since been perusing my yard for cut back opportunities or dead trees - just to buck, split and stack. My wife keeps questioning why we need so much wood and what we are going to do with it (she is logical and I fabricate answers). This site makes me feel normal - almost like a support group for this new addiction. Here are some pictures I took of my set up and some of my stack. Using the calculator Ive got close to 2.5 cords - most of which is Southern Hackberry but I did find a dying water oak
Nice three saw plan you have there! Those Shinny's are solid saws! The Ariens splitters are top notch too! Welcome to da club you will fit right in here!
Thanks guys. I really didn't know what I was doing when I bought the 591 but I've done business with my local dealer for the last 13 years on lawn stuff and that's what he recommended. Watched some of videos on safety and technique and just started cutting. I have found the sometimes I buck too short because cutting is so much fun.
Very cool.... Nice to see a different Florida environment for Firewood addictions issues. Even in Florida you need some heat in winter! Ever think of a woodstove or is just too warm where your at?
A wood stove has never crossed my mind. We love using the fireplace but last year it was unusually warm. Hopefully that was indeed unusual.
Nice setup with the JD tractor and splitter behind it there. Nothing like a warm fire in winter. It does not matter where you are the effects are the same. Heck you could even get your self a nice out door fire pit and have some good times there also. The wood will not go to waste.
Welcome Wanefree You're gonna like it here, I guarantee it...most of us are addiction counselors, we'll help you through no matter where you live...hope the SO likes it warm cause you'll be burnin....I hope to be on the Space Coast within the year...
You are sick dude, and need some counseling. Fortunately you have come to the right place, I counsel you to carry on. And buy a stove, because you realy need to step up the wood consumption. Run the airconditioner while you burn if it gets too warm.
Welcome Wanefree! There's a great group here that you just added yourself to. Looks like you've got a sweet line up of tools, so keep hoarding!
Don't let theses guys fool you the only counseling we do is help persuade you into another purchase. If anything we are enablers. I know I don't have a problem. Because if I had a problem then almost everyone here would have a problem and these guys are great so they can't have any problems. It is the people who look at us sideways for having our passion to hold on to a heritage that help build and keep the world warm that need counseling. Or at least some education lol Welcome! You have a great looking operation. Look forward to more from Florida
Welcome to da club. You have a nice lineup of toys, ah! tools Hey, if you want to sit back and enjoy a nice fire you need to have some keep it up
