That's been on the docket for a while. They've just never gone after a manufacturer, yet.

Straight from the factory, all bikes are legal, even sound emissions wise. No bike comes with straight pipes, no mufflers. Aftermarket wise, I can only think of one brand of bikes that aftermarket exhaust companies make no muffler pipes for.

Some cities are ticketing bikes for lack of mufflers or straight pipes.

There's plenty of bad drivers that should be forced to have the car drive for them.:jaw:

DING DING DING!!! WINNER! Give this man his Chicken dinner! Only the goobemint would think they are helping "save the whales" by filtering the exhaust then dumping a bunch of fuel on it so it will burn off in a cloud of smoke! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:MO-RONS!
I talk to company after company that has traditionally run diesel light truck fleets that have now switched to gas power due to
    1. Up front cost of diesels
    2. Diesel fuel mileage continues to fall (while the gassers continue to climb)
    3. Maintenance and repair costs on the diesels continue to climb rapidly
    4. Diesel reliability is down (and can often only be repaired by dealers) (Our F750 dump truck was purchased new at the local Ford dealer, but the Cat engine and its very troublesome exhaust re-gen system has to be worked on by Cat dealer 40 minutes away)
EPA is to be blamed for all of this IMO. ^ ^ ^
They have done much good (in the past), and have their place, but need to be put back "in it"...BIG TIME!

Haha this is what I meant by over engineered. The epa has made the modern diesel engine way too complicated. Are you running ultra low sulfur diesel only in that truck? I've seen fuel with too high sulfur content reek havoc.

There are a few manufacturers who did the right thing and engineered their engines to only need diesel exhaust fluid. Diesel exhaust fluid is your friend. It works much better than egr and a particulate filter.

It wasn't all that long ago that you could buy a light or medium duty truck with a big ole gasser under the hood with similar capability to it's diesel siblings. And when said gasser was worn out, you could replace it with a new engine for what dealers charged to repair a diesel truck.

Unfortunately, artificially inflated fuel prices (which the diesel crowd felt too) put the big-blocks down, probably for good. And while there are a few powerful gas engine options out there, it remains to be seen if they are as durable as the old BBs were. (I hope so). But the other components that make up a truck matter just as much if not more than the engine. And the last time I went shopping in this category, the diesels all had upgraded suspensions, brakes, and rears that the gas options lacked. :(

Yes sir, that's all it has ever had.
Part of the problem...well, a couple things actually. 1. There is no way to tell when it is in re-gen, as in there is no light or anything on the dash. So no way to know when it did its thing last...until the check engine light comes on. 2. We recently found out it was programmed for highway service, but it gets used mainly around town with plenty of idle time. The dealer recently re-programmed it for PTO service and said to set it to idle at 1000 RPM when it has to set running for an extended time. We'll see how it goes. If that doesn't work I'd like to see if they can us give a button to manually activate it...and maybe a light to show it happening. Nothing like being out on an emergency call in January at 3 AM when its 0* and your truck shuts down on the side of the road...or will only go 20 mph. PITA.
    True, good point

This is the downfall of tier 4 emissions. Overselling a vehicle does not work out well. Having too much engine for what you need results in lower engine temperatures and more particulate matter. Your almost better getting a smaller engine and working it harder.

The talk about recalls got me thinking about GMs ignition recall a few years ago.

Almost 3 million vehicles recalled after over 100 people died from ignition problems.

Not sure what other people had to do but here is the solution for my wife's Malibu.

The key had an insert glued in place by the dealer.

My wife may have put 5000 miles on since the recall and here is what that recall looks like..

Just got to love how this was approved by the GM execs and our government. :)

I think they said the weight and motion of a heavy key ring was messing with the ignition switch, but I could be wrong.

So just like in your picture, people will put a standard ring through the key...and then hang all their same crap off of that ring instead of the key directly...of course, then it is not GMs fault (directly) cause they "tried". I thought they were gonna hafta actually replace the ignition switches...guess not... Goverment Motors...:zip:

What I dont like is the half hearted fix. All that to superglue plastic pieces.

These are spare keys that rarely gets used. My wife has no additional keys on her set and they are in the same condition. Doh!

I thought all cars affected had to get new ignition switches installed by the dealer. The work around I saw was to remove all keys and chains, rings etc removed from the car key, until the new switch could be installed.

I thought so too, this is all they did under the recall notice we brought in.

The switch was cut rate and cost the least of all switches considered by gm engineers, buyers, accountants, and project management. The cost savings versus the better switch was like 10 cents a switch.

That cost savings went away quickly.:loco:

I'd look into this if I were you. Until then, I'd remove all hanging keys, beer openers, screnches, etc from the key.

What year and model? I can help you out and research this if you want.

Thanks. My bride doesn't have anything attached so we minimized that probability.

    It's a 2000 Malibu. Thanks.

This stuff with miles and other suggestions are not factual but suggestions.
Most pcms need heat cycles, ECT to reach of fall below ambient air temperature. That is a heat cycle.
Every heat cycle the pcm does a "health check".
Most systems need an error twice. For most pcms and emissions checks its usually Two heat cycles.

Its one huge plus of having engine tuning software.
Just turn off the check engine light!

    That does make it easier.
