We received enough rain last weekend that I actually had to mow the (whole) yard tonight. We live on the corner of a pretty busy county road and a little less busy township road so there is plenty of roadside yard. Everytime I mow I have to pick up all kinds of trash, fast food packaging, cans, cups, bottles, plastic bags, boxes, anything you can imagine. What the heck is wrong with people that they think that the minute they are "done" with something they can just whip it out the window?!! I would never dream of throwin anything out the window unless it just bit me or is on fire! (well, maybe an apple core or something like that).
Is it just me? Do you just whip it out the window? If so, why? Is your car so full of crap that you absolutely cannot wait 'til you stop to throw things in the appropriate receptacle?! :hair: No respect :headbang:
And this is not a recent thing either, I grew up on this road and as a kid I picked up trash before we mowed back then too (maybe slightly less?)

Never did it, don't get it. Trash cans everywhere, no excuses but lazy and a lack of respect.

One of the reasons I hate going downstate. Absolute filth and no regard for anything other than "me". Didn't like it when I lived there, and less now.
Almost no trash up here, except after the weekend warriors have been here. I find bottles, cups, and cigarette boxes/butts up and down our road.....

It wasn't so long ago that littering wasn't such a sin. A shame to see how much garbage we still just toss today. Not everyplace is as bad as (sub)urban USA however. While working in Germany, it was remarkable how clean most city streets were in comparison to home. Partly because the municipalities had workers out street sweeping every morning and also because folks just didn't fling their trash out the window.

I don't know what's wrong with people, I run into this sometimes but I know darn well nobody on my street is throwing this crap out, I see. Fast food paper bags and cups.
If I caught them doing it, I don't know!! I might end up in jail.

Perhaps it's how some were raised although I pretty much raised myself, and I don't have it in me to throw so much as a gum wrapper let alone some kind of beverage container or other trash on the ground for someone else to pick up. It's not unusual to find my right pants pocket filled with some kind of trash that I've either picked up or created myself (gum wrappers or similar).

So far I've only found one beer can in the ditch at the front of my property which I put in my wood stove, and that's over the course of 6 years. No wrappers or other trash of any kind. But, if someone would toss something, they would be on video, so I would at least know who the culprit was. Then I might have to follow them the next time they came by to find where they lived. That way I could leave them a gift on their front doorstep (the stankiest trash I could come up with), with a note indicating why where they would find it. :)

I love on a short dead end road. Most of the traffic is residents. There's still trash up and down my road every day. The kids and I regularly drive up and down the road on the gator picking it up. It's like a game for them now that we got the trash picker upper thingy. Hopefully this will help create a life long habit of taking care of the land.

I'm amazed how many empty beer cans and bottles I pick up in my front ditch. Clearly "open container" laws are only forcing people to get rid of the evidence.

Seeing cigarette butts flipped out of car windows is one of my pet peeves. I wish cops would cruise in unmarked cars and nab anyone that's caught littering. I think that's way worse of an offence than driving 10mph over the limit.

I get lots of trash in my yard too. One day I got three partly used Gatorades. I also get a lot of those individual floss things. And I think someone is stalking me because I find cig butts of a single kind congregating in one place - I'm guessing from a walker. Of course I get empty bottles/cans, paper trash, receipts (?) and other oddball stuff.

Really, about the only thing I don't find by the street is dog poo - which considering the amount of people who walk their dogs by my place, is dang near a miracle.

Thankfully, doggy doo doesn't travel in the breeze quite as readily as Big Mac wrappers.

Remember that one quite well actually.
It's ironic....just drive on to any reservation around here and you'll see how ironic it is.
Now before anyone else goes flying off at this comment, this was pointed out to me by a reservation member!

It is sad. Really sad. Even far out in the country we see it. We live where there is one way in and one way out along with several others. Still, it is amazing how much trash we find along the roads. Then to top it off, last week while riding my bicycle I was less than 2 miles from home and was sickened when I found dirty diapers thrown and they were not off the roadway either. I wish disposable diapers were outlawed...

Is this a new thing? No. Even back when my wife and I were married (1962) we foolishly bought a house near a 4 corners. Every time I mowed lawn, I had to take time to pick up all the trash along the road. I even took to just throwing it back onto the road. Believe it or not, this did put a stop to a lot of it. Sort of like I did when I "returned" the dog poo that was deposited in our lawn daily.

One more thing is we used to live not far from papadave but we were in a snow belt. It was disgusting every spring when the snow began melting how many beer and pop cans showed up along the roadways and the 2 tracks.

This thing with pop and beer cans was helped a lot though when Michigan residents wisely passed a law so that those cans are not returnable. No, it did not stop it totally but probably 98% of it. Now if we can get water bottles and the like returnable it would be a great thing.

Hey Pyroholic, forgive me but I just had to laugh when reading your post. Shoot, I have loved on a dead end road before too but usually wanted more than one way out! and preferably we loved on roads that were not heavily traveled either by residents or nonresidents.

MasterMech , most of Europe is clean because the littering fines are massive.

They need to enforce the littering fines here in the states.

If I were a cop, I'd bust people for littering, not for speeding within reasonable amounts.

I had a young girl flip her lit cigarette butt up and out of her car window, on the freeway. I was behind her on my motorcycle. That lit butt hit me square in the center of my visor of my helmet. Luckily I had the visor down.

She ended up getting off the highway at my same exit, living in my same town. I had some words for her when she got out of her car. She was very apologetic, had no clue of what she did, but I imagine it scared the hell out of her. I also told her the next time she has some guy tail her home, to go to the police station, or somewhere very public and not her apartment with street parking. :picard:. She was clueless on so many levels.
