My last year with marginal wood

Well I joined this in February of 2015 it was 30 below and i had 12 cord of sugar maple on my wood deck. I thought i was ok..

so after reading the mantra of 3 years ahead (thanks to Dennis and many others), I just did not know how i was ever going to get three years ahead burning 10 to 15 cord a year. I mean i cannot physically put up 45 cord in a year. Well thanks to a warm 2016 and my new Woodstock Ideal Steel i only burned 4.5 cord last year

So figure 5 cord a year and i was doing 10 cord normally. I am almost at my 15 to 18 cord 3 year status..

The giver of wood 6 ash trees and 2 red maple.. I know pics of before would have been good but ash trees were weak and 6 leaders intertwined etc etc.. I needed Eric VW up here to


This here is the remnants of of the brush piled was bigger than 1 car garage.

Now on to the Stacks i split and stacked these pallets this morning and it started to rain so pics are from outside car window. Guess about a cord

Then this years wood single row stacked and top covered.. Cut in February cold snap its testing between 18 - 22 percent on MM. Mix of it all Birch, softmaple, cherry, ash etc etc

Row measures out at over 88 feet long average of 5 foot tall most splits about 18 inches long there is a 70 foot row right next to it

the of course still in process pile that never seems to finish


and the last of the monster ash rounds that need tractor to get onto splitter the one on the right has 2 by 4 on it for reference and is split about in thirds from big ones on left




So in short right now i got about 11 cord stacked out back in processing area plus 3 or 4 cord stacked in woods behind garage and everywhere... in The North when there is snow you can only work where the snowblower goes cause im too lazy to split or stack in Snow shoes..

Plus there is a few more ash sugar and elm that need to fall to my but i will finish these and cut those in the dead of winter as they the wood seems to start so much dryer

Ohh, i am going to pallets for now until i find some IBC totes as all of this wood gets moved to wood deck in Fall and i got a that will have forks on it by then.. I dont mind stacking i hate unstacking to retack it onto deck

 

yeah, those sounds measure about 54 inches tall .. three logs... that were 10 to 12 feet long smallest was 39 inches tall at small end... that makes up most of 3 to 4 cord here and there C/S/S where they laying...

 

Nice work Canadian border VT I believe you have got it well underway. It really is a relief, especially barring unforeseen curves that life can toss...Great looking stacks, nice variety... And bonus awesome dog pic...now for a well deserved beer!

So if I got partner I can cut and split... just go slow and careful... was last week it was 95 degrees wife was i can split it heat as long as it wasn't rainin wet bark too slippery...

 

Nice stacks. It's funny I love looking at people's stacks. Even when I'm driving I'm always looking for stacks. Those are some serious rounds!

CBVT, looks like you are going to be set up nicely. Even though last winter was milder, I can't believe you burned that much less wood with the Woodstock. If that holds in a real cold winter that stove will have paid for itself right quick.

 

I am good... knee healing fine... used extra down time to get ahead on wood around PT appointments.. when life gives you lemons make lemonade and buy some Good vodka my niece aND family came up with 461 to help cut then big round.. taught me how to block a log on front of bucket without bending knee

 

Yup, burned a third the wood house was warmer.. we had a couple weeks below 0.. stove had no problems. old stove burned hot and fast doubled damper 4 hours needed a match.. this one has great low end capabilities 20 hour burn in shoulder season on popular .. I was with a big

Nice work Canadian border VT , I'm hearing that we'll have that old fashion winter, lots of snow and cold azz weather.

 

Yup, it is a BUTTLOAD of work getting 3 years ahead (unless you are BeechNut ) but it is SOOO worth it. I love only having to cut to replenish what I used...heck with the mild winter we had last year, I just did a lil scrounging to replenish this year...haven't actually cut a tree down in a while now.
Plus, once you get into that 3 YO wood, and you go to clean your chimney, and all you find is a lil black dust...its time!
