My BIL sent me this picture. He says the branch came down in his yard and he saved it for me. (Thrilled that he thought to do that for me,) I can't tell what the heck it is from this picture. Any guesses? I thought he only had locust and oak in his yard. Sure doesn't look like either of them to me. It's the only pic I've got. I'm sure the darker inner of the tree should be a give away but it's not. LOL Thanks Hoarders!
Might be! For some reason I thought that darker inner was a softer cottonwood or Linden. I really need to learn more about tree ID. Even if it's got the BTU's of cardboard the gesture is nice. It may be fire pit wood at the worst.
Well, I was gonna say maple (actually DID but deleted my comment because I didn't look all the way through the post), yes the leaf nails it down.....Hackberry! I don't see it very often around my parts.....
Got a lot of hackberry around here, but never have cut any. Never would have guessed the color contrast to the heart wood. Thanks for your help everyone!
I'm hijacking your thread Pete as I also need some help on identifying what type of wood this might be. I also need to better learn to ID the different types of wood. Thanks for the help.
Color difference is due to the center rot. Notice the smaller stuff has no center rot and no color difference. I'd tell the bro, that the whole shebang may need to come down.
Gotcha bocefus78! That's rather obvious now that you point it out. I'll take a look when I'm there next and see how bad the tree looks. I'd be willing to bet I will be involved in removing the rest of it. WIN! TBONE, hijack away! I'm not guessing though.
