Splitter is home!:banana:, Splitter works real nice!!! "BUT" The cost of the lines were "ASTRONOMICAL" :makeitrain":emptywallet:!!! I do want to say that the people that did this did a super job. And I have no problem with labor costs, Everyone has to eat… But for what I paid in custom lines and fittings, I could have purchased a "nice"economy complete splitter. Have any of you every heard of being charged by the inch for hydraulic hose??? :picard::zip:. Needless to say I had three semi-arguements with him, paid my bill so the splitter wasn't held hostage and I'm looking into my next steps with this company. Ironically some folks recommended them and I even knew of their work. Oh well, my woes again… All I can say is it's not done yet…

Very nice job! Lines look really good! I like the high flow 90's! I had new hoses made for mine with the high flow 90's. Still havent got to put them on yet! That's another thing I have to get done!

Well the upside is you know you built it and it will last a LOONG time. I do feel your pain though I built the first one too and it went great until I walked in to farm and home to buy a pump..... Lol

I guess he could have rounded up to the next foot and charged more. :) That is the norm around here anymore, charging by the inch. Those long sweep 90's are at least $30.00 each anymore. Heck, any fitting is $20.00 +. Hydraulic shops around here will NOT crimp any new fitting on an existing hose because of liability. Try to take that when you need a fitting on the end of a 50 foot hose!

With steel prices and such building your own anymore is more expensive than a prebuilt. Unless you have something in mind that is not made, don't kid yourself on saving money.

I appreciate the thought Kevin and your right. I've been in the Engineering/welding field for nearly 40 years now, I started welding at 16 nearly full time, "not good mind you" but scratching away in a boat yard.
When I started the log splitter I really wanted very simple, I didn't need anything else and I had my work shop to do it in. So I picked up a piece here, motor from a power washer, picked up a piece there and I'll be honest, it's been a while since I've been in the hydraulic world so I was "FAR" out of touch with pricing. "boy did I learn quickly"!!!:whistle:. Now with that said, I've been going back over my invoice and I found that he charged me on some things more than 4 times the standard price on the web. That was just wrong, so it's not done… Oh, and that long sweep 90 you were talking about, he charged me $68.00 for 1

As long as your comparing apples to apples as far as brands go I would say he was out of line. Comparing a Parker fitting to an offshore price is not the same. I too was in shocked by how much stuff has increased. I went back and tallied up just SOME of the bills for hoses and fitting on mine and it was over $1100.00 and that was in 2112. There is a reason tractors are way over $100,000 anymore. I pay more for used steel now than I used to for new.

I'll agree with being out of the loop "but" The 45 on the back of my tank I found everywhere between $45.00 and $32.00 at the price I could have bought it and they are still making money. He charged me $116.92!!! Is that bad mouthing or getting an A$$ raping? Even if he doubled it at $32.00 that still would be only $64.00. Whats right is right and whats wrong is wrong! I don't mind people making money, "thats business" But "really"??? I called another local place for that fitting and was quoted $38.65 installed on the hose! So for the record, Look at that/my splitter and see where you see $981.65

dave, I do not see a grand there in hose and fittings.. but did they give you a rough estimate? markups on stuff can be a little :loco: .. 300% is a bit extreme... I think your post is fair.... high quality work but for that :makeitrain" it should be!

I do not see that much there for the price given. I'd have a hard time sitting as well.

At first I was thinking there may be $200 worth of hoses there...but it sounds like things have gone up in the last few years (big surprise, right?) so to me, I'd have choked if the bill was much over $300.
Some of the larger farmers around here have there own press and stock of "their" common fittings and hose...guess I know why they might go to all this trouble/expense now!
My neighbor would allow me to "scab" together a used hose using his equipment...but I have helped him out a lot over the years

I wish I could have. There was "no" estimate but he said verbally that "it can't be that much"!!! And I took him at his word as a man, also I "TRY" my best to keep business local. Sadly it won't be the case in the future. Again, I want to elaborate, the job is beautiful and I don't mind paying for quality, But I think we can all agree here this was a bit expensive! :picard:

That's about where I was thinking and then labor. His shop labor was $100.00 an hour, and he said he didn't charge me for a 1/2 hour, he was being generous!
