Is there any way to tell what the correct round file is for a chain? I have an 029 super and the previous owner put on a brand new Oregon chain. A 5/32" file fits but is almost not quite big enough. I have another file that is a bit bigger and seems to fit but I don't know what size it is.

You should probably go up to a 7/32" .... is the chain 3/8"?

I'm going to guess on that saw, it is a 3/8 chain, and ya need like said 7/32.
Look for numbers on the chain, and bar, take a close up pic
Bar will tell you what is supposed to be on it, but that doesn't mean the one on it is correct, but probably is

Look for "stamped" info on the bar....near the power head..... Either 3/8(.375) or .325.... Then we can go from there.

If you don't have a caliper to measure that file just set it on a tape measure and look close, should be able to tell what size it is

Stihl bar. .325 on the side. The number 22 is on the Oregon links.

They recommend using a 5/32" round file on that chain. It might seam small but that's it is what I use for that chain.

It does seem to fit. I just questioned it because my smaller 021 with an Oregon bar n chain uses a 5/32" as well.

You're right to question it as most .325" chain is a 3/16" file.

So it seems like the general consensus is a 5/32" file.

    And to further complicate matters...
    I just got a Craftsman 3.0 / Poulan 3000 and it's .325 but calls for a 11/64" file.
    I got a parts lot of chains and 5 are 3/8 Oregon 72 Semi-Chisel XtraGUARD - and they call for a 3/16"file. Oregon 72 in 3/16?????? Well, I never!
