So, after several failed attempts, then finally making a run to the store, I got it.
Bi-metal blade worked quite well for the curved cut. I got part way through the long straight cutoff, and it just flat out stopped cutting.
Out came my SisIL's sawzall with another bi-metal blade, and it's done.
Ok, it's not done, but the cuts are.

Last cut is a little crookedy, but it'll straighten out with the grinder. Still have to ease the edges too, so I'll go back at it next chance I get. IMG_20160805_163810_440.jpg

I know the mail lady up there in Maumee...you want me to crack the whip on 'er a lil?

How thick are those cutting discs? The cut just looks a little wide...maybe it's just the pic...the cutting discs that I like are just a bit less than 1/16" thick.
    Lookin gooder!

    Hmmm, it's a UPS thing.
You can crack the whip on your USPS lady if you'd like though. That's a whole 'nother thing.:D
Anyway, the last pic is when I got done and had the pieces separated. The disc was about 1/16". The new one I got is 1/8", and I didn't use it.

Brought the plate in and set it on the stove for a look-see.
Wife had a rock from the beach in the stove room just about the right size to keep the plate up..........
Yeah, the stove's dusty. We live on a dirt road, and if I clean it off, it'll be dusty again tomorrow. I do it when it bugs me too bad.

I'll also be making the cover plate to fit around the back side of the pipe. Need to grab at least one more bi-metal for that.
Gotta' say thanks to DexterDay and Highbeam for the inspiration to do this.

Still waiting on the square tube stock. It's stuck in Maumee, Ohio.
Once that arrives, I can finalize things by cutting to length, doing some fancy cutting at the back where the heat shield comes up, cleaning all the gunk off, and getting a few coats of paint on everything.
There will be more pics, as long as the interest is there.

I was going to cut it down to size first (didn't have to), but I really wanted to use the blade that was actually cutting to get the pipe opening done.
I'll be easing all the edges, and rounding at least the front corners.
Going to Gaylord tomorrow, and I think I might invest in a couple nice files for this project.
