Yesterday a guy at work was trying to convince me to sell him some of my firewood and we had a pretty interesting conversation when I promptly told him NO. I had to listen to him whine about how he couldn't find any right now and he likes burning in his fireplace at night to help with the heating bills....... I finally told him I didn't care! I then told him even if i did sell some he couldn't afford any of mine as it is priceless to me. I told him that was my family's heat for the next four years and he should think about it next summer when he is making fun of me cutting and splitting wood every weekend that I get a chance. I get sick of every person who knows about my Wood pile thinking I should sell them some! Get off of your lazy butt and go cut your own. pizz poor planning and laziness on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part.

If this was truly someone needing help I would help them but coming from a lazy person who would rather go drinking with his friends all weekend and lay around nursing a hangover forget it your on your own. I have my own family to worry about and take care of!

I don't even give my brother in law wood when he was whining about not having enough. I politely told him at I have warned him time and time again to get ahead and at the rate I am going through it I am not selling any. I mean seriously got cut your own. He makes comments about my firewood hoarding all the time maybe this year will be his wake up call when he gets next months heating bill. Hey at least he can turn his furnace on cause I don't have one to turn on! I mean I'm not over there tying into his heat source and borrow his heat lol

Alright rant over...... I was complaining to my wife about this last night and she quit listening 30 seconds into the conversation but I figured you all would understand.

I hear ya. I'm only about 2 years ahead at the moment and anybody who sees my stacks is convinced I'm going into the firewood business.

Feel free to rant, this is one of the few places you will find other ants in a world full of grasshoppers. I suppose it wouldn't do any good to tell him that burning in his fireplace isn't going to lower his heating bills anyway?

I already tried that and I quote " but its a special high efficiency fireplace that has tubes which run around it and when you sit in front of it you can feel the heat radiating out of it. " I was over there to work on his heat pump awhile ago and it's a standard fireplace that you burn with the doors wide open. It even says don't close them as the glass will crack. You can't fix stupid

Fireplaces are a waste. Before researching wood stoves we burnt wood in our fireplace. Once the fire got going good, the furnace kicked on. All that heat was going straight up the flue. Thankfully I found the other place and got enlightened about true wood heating, seasoning wood, and getting years ahead on a supply. :fire:

I stand corrected. Must be one of those EPA certified secondary burn fireplaces

I have been supplying my Bil, but he has helped me with things in the past, and he provided me a place to cut at least a whole years worth of wood. He also only burns about a cord per year. I'll be into less than ideal wood before the winter's over, but it will still be better wood than last year.

My cousin called yesterday saying he heard I had a lot of wood and wanted to buy some. I rarely even see him so I don't feel any obligation. I know he can afford his heat Bill too. I haven't called him back yet, but you can probably guess what the answer will be.

Next year might be different. I'll have enough to sell, but not now.

I had to laugh at this post as I've gone through similar scenarios SEVERAL times the past month alone! And its the same thing.......people sit around and have fun all summer and fall and come winter expect to buy my firewood (when I busted my azz all summer processing it). Aint gonna happen boys!!

Regardless of what he wants to burn it in, around my area there are signs all over the place that say, "Firewood for Sale" and you can buy as much as you want, or as little. Usually about $160 a cord for green, and about $260 a cord for "Seasoned" (whatever that might mean).

You guys out there don't have wood dealers?

Hey, I'm surprised that people are offering to buy the wood. In our world today a lot of people feel they are entitled and you should just give them your wood. It's just not fare that you have all of that wood. Just lay on your lazy friggin azz and let someone else do the work.

I sell a little to my neighbor. They were a little confused this year when I told them I could only sell them about a cord when I have 20 sitting there in plain view of the road.

They like my wood better than the guy they've been buying if from (because it is c/s/s 2-3 years) but I told them the other guys would be just as good and much cheaper if they bought it in the spring. They didn't want to hear it.

If it keeps this crap up I'm getting a pellet or wood furnace to supplement the basement with during the extended cold snaps! My basement is 37 degrees this morning and my kitchen floor temps are 40 degrees. Actually every room on the first floor except for the living room is hovering around 40 degree temp on the floor if you shoot the floor with an ir thermo. The living room is ok since there is carpet and padding. I can't afford to insulate the basement ceiling it or it would get even colder down there. Just the convection flow through my ductwork system makes it feel like the AC is turned on and blowing out of the vents but I'm afraid to shut them as it's getting heat down there and I don't want a pipe to freeze up.

Right where I want to be.
My sis-in-law's place has a fireplace.
Last time she was up here, I was over there helping do some things to the house, and the furnace isn't running yet....long story.
She mentioned having a fire to warm us and the house. My comment was something like...."good luck with that".
Yeah, you guessed it......about 8' in front of the fireplace was marginally warm, but the rest of the place was freezing.
We moved a stud wall (still in the rough stage), and called it a day.
She has mentioned putting a stove in the new room/breezeway, and I've mentioned putting in a new insert or stove (she had an old Earth stove) as well.
My brother finally asked me for my firewood guy's number. We'll see if he manages to get any wood, after I declined to either sell him some of mine or be his supplier.
I didn't want to go so far as to tell him he couldn't afford the firewood I'd sell.
Most don't understand the whole "wood drying" for more than a couple months concept.
Certified, maybe invite the guy to the house for a little covert lesson on how a new stove burns with dry wood.
Heck, use an old stove if you want, it'll still burn better/cleaner with dry wood than a fireplace.

What are the room air temps on the first floor? The T6 is a hoss, but if it isn't enough, it isn't enough. I'd be looking for a wood furnace that ties into the existing ductwork.

Room temps weren't that bad....... I lost a lot of ground yesterday the stove went 13 hours without being reloaded and I didn't get to bring the house temp back up before bed so last night's reload the first floor temp was at 64-66ish and I reloaded 6:40 and 7:30pm when I got home then reloaded at 5am and the first floor temp was at 60. By the time I left for work this morning the first floor was back up to 68.

But I'm heating close to 2400 sq ft above ground and then have a 1200 sq ft basement under me at 37 degrees and no insulation between me and the basement. It will be fine today because my wife is home and will reload around 3pm. The last two days she has been gone and the outdoor temps never got above 10 degrees. The stove was going for over half a day at a time with no reload. It's not really the stoves fault I'm asking a lot out of it with 13 hour reloads on a 3600 sq ft of house. It does fine with 13 hour reloads until my basement temps drop into the 30's and then it takes a lot of heat out of the stove to overcome all the cold radiating through the floor. I need heat in the basement to keep the temps 45 or above and the stove would do fine.

That is a lot of heat load to ask of a 13 hr burn. How about a second stove in the basement? Hopefully you will get some relief in the weather.
