I've sold countless 6400's just because of the ability to upgrade it later on but have yet to upgrade a single one.....most firewood guys deem the 6400 power to be plenty for 20-24" bars and occasional 28" use.

You cannot take the saw back. You buy it as is. I think I even signed something agreeing to it. If you pushed the issue who knows but that's what I remember.

That being said I have yet to see anyone have an issue with a HD rental saw.

Pretty much the point of my post is it would be hard to get hurt with a running 6421 at $320. It's not my style, but make enough noise and HD will issue store credit for a half-eaten PBJ sandwich.

Agreed... Pretty hard to go wrong with one. These saws are much better taken care of than anything the average Harry Homeowner would own and sell on C/L. Unlike most Homer Despot employees the tool rental guys actually know what they are doing. Usually....:D

Awesome stuff fellas. I was off for a day and come back to some really cool info.
My intention is to pick up a used Makita on friday. They advertised the 64cc w/a 20" B&C for $322.
I'll go over things just as you guys have said; idle, score marks check, exterior condition etc...

When I went and got mine there was 2 to choose from.
There was no mechanic there at the time, to ask to remove the muffler, most of them are probably not going to like doing that, I did take a t27 Torx with me but it was not long enough,.
I did take off the clutch cover bar and chain and checked everything out and pulled the plug.
Started it up, let it idle, run it in different positions, ran it WOT
if you plan on taking the muffler off your self you're going to need extra long Torx.
Something like this or any other t27 that's long enough

One of the cheap L-shaped T-27 wrenches you can get from any Stihl dealer would do the trick. When reinstalling a muffler I also find it extremely handy to have a wooden chopstick, to help with alignment and keep the gasket in position while tightening the first screw.

I would go sooner than Friday they sell fast!. It may still be there but you don't want to miss out on the deal!

And I would still check it for scoring. You would hate to get a scored one for $322 when you could of bought the "other one" and it not be scored for $322

I had some time today to go to HD and visit a tool rental center. The one I went to had 2 Makita 6421 for sale. The weekend manager showed me both saws, they were bought and put in service at the same time, they are 2.5 yrs old. He wouldn't show me any rental records so I have no idea how often they went out. The only ongoing issue I was told about is the carbs for both have to be replaced before they can be sold. One had an adjustment screw stripped and the second was missing an adjustment screw. The next thing is the daytime manager is the only one that can sell any rental equipment, so I have to go back someday this week to talk to him. I explained to the guy I talked to today that I wanted the plug and muffler pulled for inspection, he said they would have no problem doing that.
The plastic was marked but not beat, no cracks and no missing parts. the online price was $322 but theres a chance they will go down to $279.

If this all goes through and the piston seems ok, should I upgrade this saw or keep it as a 64cc? What kind of money are we talking to upgrade?

I say run it for a bit. It's a little heavy for its size but it's a runner and it's smooth as silk.

    The conversion is 200 bones

Heck yeah that's a steal! With the conversion he'd have a 79 cc pro saw for under 500!

Give them whatever beads and trinkets they desire and run away like you stole it. New carb too? SOLD!

Won't hurt to run it as is and see how you like it before upgrading.

I never got back there this week. I called them on Tuesday and asked if there were any other lurkers like me and they said no. They also hadn't done the new carbs yet either.

I'm really thinking of doing the upgrade over the winter if the saw checks out. As clemsonfor said, for $279 and the upgrade you can't go wrong.

    I'm thinking a 20" bar would do nicely :saw::saw::saw:
