Stopped by a local pawn shop for the 1st time in a couple of months and immediately noticed 2 good looking saws (1 orange, 1 white) and got a little excited.

A newer 460 rancher and an MS391. Gave 'em a once over and really liked what I saw...until I looked at the price tags. $440 for the Husky and $420 for the Stihl.

    Unbelievable!

Not many good chainsaw deals in pawn shops. The examples you cited are way overpriced. About 10 years ago i got a 394xp that would not start for $150, it only needed a carb kit cheap fix. Probly the best deal i ever got on a saw.

I was told by one pawn shop owner that they tend to set their prices according to what an item commonly sells for on eBay. I don't know if it hold true for all pawn shops though.

I get some great deals on saws at pawn shops. I have cultivated relationships with the managers at 6 or 7 shops locally and they will price items to me to move them. They know I have the cash to buy and in some cases will hold items in the back for me.

Too many to list, one of the better ones was a Stihl 044 priced at $399 for $100 out the door. I have paid more than I should on a few items and bought stuff I really didn't want a few times to keep the relationship going.

I've only seen 1 good price at a pawn shop in my entire life. and I've been to MANY pawn shops in the last 20 years.

Always kinda wondered why they even have used stuff for sale at 125% retail, makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Always just sort of assumed it is a front for something else.

I never even stop at any store that advertises pawn services.

Edit: actually, I did stop in a pawn shop about a year ago because the owner and I are members of the same organization. never got to meet him yet. Lots of stuff for sale was at a reasonable price, but they didn't have any power equipment that I recall. Downside is, the 10 things I asked about buying "were not for sale". I have talked to many folks in there who also tried to purchase things that "were not for sale". but that may have been their way of saying "you can't afford it".. who knows.

I visited a few in Richmond before I moved, but do not recall ever buying much of anything. However, I did find a nice Stihl 026 at a consignment shop on Staples Mill Rd. forr $45 that was advertised on Craigslist.

Yea I stop in a pawn shop about once every year or two thinking I will spot something. Never do. I share the same thought. Why would I buy something in there thats 80-110% of retail, looks well used and has no warrenty?

I have before bought single tools out of the misselanous socket and wrench boxes when I was in HS and needed a certain size I didn't not have and didn't want to buy a set or something. It usually was when I was in the middle of fixing something and needed it too. Usually you count get a wrench for a dollar or $1.50. And I got sockets for .25 -.75. Sometimes they were craftsman or some other quality sometimes china. I wasent building a collection so I didn't care if there was a craftsman wrench for The same thing as the china on I bought qualty. But usually bought the socket for the job and left. I probably still have every one I bought someone where in my tools.

I typically pay what they ask, I did dicker a bit on a saw I recently bought from them. I have bought stuff that was pawned and the customer made payments on and lost. They make their money on loans.

Nobody is buying or selling husky ranchers for 60 dollars off what you can buy them new for.
The 361 isn't that far off at all, if it was clean enough it's worth an offer.
