Well it has 80-90wt in it about 3/4 of an inch down from the fill hole. Trying to figure out where the level should be at. Is the small plug the drain? I dont see any thing else under it that looks like a drain. Both seals are nice and dry with no signs of seepage, the bearings feel good and no roughness or catching in the gearbox when I turn the input shaft by hand. I paid 300.00 for it, I dont think I will get hurt to bad.
The bolt that is in it is a 1/2" which seems awfully heavy. Everything I have heard is most of them use 3/8. I believe I have an independent PTO and I saw someplace where they recommend a slip clutch, think I should change it over? Gary
I'm the slip clutch guy. If you can get a deal on one or have an oversized tractor for the 'hog, they're worth it. Otherwise, Use whatever bolt fits in the hole. You can buy Grade 2 or less if you want to, grade 5 can be used but I would create an "engineered" shear pin with a drill and a hacksaw unless you're super confident in that gearbox.
I wouldn't change it. Slip clutches are better so long as you maintain them properly. But for that a shear bolt is fine. Use the proper size for the hole.
Nice and the last part even better. Looks better than the last one I picked up. But people think bushhog are gold I think? I just cut the input seal on mine being to lazy to remove the vines it wrapped up. And when I smelled hot gear oil it was too late. If it's bush Hong brand, don't do that. The seal is $20!!! I could or tried to match it up somewhere but didnt. And no matter what site I looked on there was not an aftermarket listed. Ok sorry for the derail. Nice new toy, I mean tool
Usually gear boxes don't have a drain. Pull the face cover or tip over. That small hole is the fill level. Take it out fill through top till it runs out small one and Thenjoy put plugs back in.
Fill it to the bottom of the upper plug. Lower plug is a measley drain plug. Usually with a little age the seal go's and you'll only need the fill plug as it is self draining at this point. When it get's real bad, fill the box with 000 or corn head grease. Good deal for $300!
Guess it is a drain. Didn't look close enough but it is on the bottom side? My 2 cutters the small one I'd the fill to level. I agree when a seal goes you put oil in ot every time. But I would just put a new seal in it. Not a hard job. Esp on the input seal
