I first found this site while looking for info about tree ID's. I didn't know it at the time, but what I also found were many new friends and a few I consider family. :handshake: :)

Firewood is hard work, and it can be very rewarding. But it can feel like a bit of a solitary task at times. FHC gives me an outlet to talk about my spoils with like minded folks and try to learn more for the next time.

My name is Shawn and I am a Firewood Hoarder. :salute: Actually I hoard lumber too... Maybe Im just a :loco:

    What's your story? :)

I first caught wind of FHC via its Roku channel. I don't post much, but I follow many threads because the knowledge pool here is bottemless. :dex:

I found FHC out of necessity, but have come to love coming here and sharing stories, photos, and just chatting with like-minded, good folks. What started as desperation to keep my family warm during the winter, without breaking the bank, has now turned into my only hobby/obsession that actually SAVES money.

Several of us met elsewhere, and we founded this place specifically to have freedom to talk about hoarding wood, loving God, hunting, shooting, fishing, and family. And what a great family we've created. It's just second to none.

Two years ago I bought a house with a 1981 Russo coal/wood stove. I came online to find a manual and to see how to run it. Found the 3 sites. AS, Hrth, and FHC. Learned a lot from each of the sites and now have an Ideal Steal stove, new chimney, 3 chainsaws, 2 splitters, a 5 by 8 trailer, Stihl Kombi unit with 4 attachments, 5 cords of wood (working on 9) and a craftsman garden tractor with, plow and dump cart. Lol

I look over all 3 sites but find myself posting here the most.

I figure I'll break even in another 2 years and be saving money after.

I used to wonder why Backwoods Savage no longer posted on another site. Finally, someone there spilled the beans.
I checked out this site and signed up.
I had noticed that there was an agenda on the other site as well as some mods (not all of them) that seemed to be on a power trip.

How I found it? Noticed everyone gone from another place, literally googled "scotty overkill" and bam.

Now I FHC (verb?) because the people here are just good folks; plain and simple. It helps I like all the wood and power equipment porn.

When the member on the other site mentioned Dennis got the boot, I too googled his name and found this joint!

I also discovered the other site around the same time. I'm a member there too but Ive only posted over there a handful of times.

I grew up helping my Dad with firewood, but most of what I learned then was the "Heats you twice" part. I still had a lot of questions about heating my own new home with it. Over on the other site, they quickly put a noob like me in my place.

But there were a few helpful folks, and I noticed several of them mentioned a "Firewood Hoarders Club" in their signature. I had seen it come up in a few of my Internet searches as well, so I decided to check it out. I found the atmosphere so much friendlier here.

So I decided to stick around. My humblest apologies. :D

My blood pressure is lower here than it was over there.

Everyone brings something to the table.

I think I found all three forums at the same time while researching splitting wood. I still read stuff on AS, forgot about Hrth, and chose FHC to post because it seems right on point. I LOVE wood, all things wood! I hoard firewood and don't even have a stove to burn it in. Sitting on at least 8 cords total, over 3 cut and stacked. I have hoarded craft sized exotic and fine lumber for decades. The sweet smell of freshly sanded REAL old growth Brazilian Rosewood is like Heaven to the olfactory receptors.
I cook with wood fires as much as I possibly can. This week I put black bass whole fish stuff with lemon and herbs onto fresh split 1" planks of black cherry wood. Smoked those on the grill over a hot bed of coals from burning a bunch of ash splits. The kids loved it! I did take pics... did not forget all my wonderful FHC friends! Whenever I get my turn on the computer I will update pics on my thread in the wood pile.
Anyhoo, I really really really like wood. Cannot get enough firewood. The best is when people ask "What do you do with all that wood?"... I grin and say "Burn it!".

After watching the other site chit on some members I decided that was it for me so after what felt like two months (not sure how long it was), Overkill sends me a link to the original FHC site so I started taking the camera back in the woods with me when I was cutting.

I haven't been cutting much because of a death in our family and the hot weather but I hope to get into a big downed Maple at the end of August or the beginning of September.

I had planned to get the Maple early on but our neighbor (he sold us all our property) was at home with Hospice (he passed away) and the area the Maple is on was on the hill on our property behind his house so I didn't want him putting up with the noise.
