There was an article recently about a small Alaskan town, miles and miles from nowhere, closing the Dump to locals- seems for many years it was more less considered a trading/ recycling place. Yep, now considered a hazard as someone might hurt themselves and sue the town. Now we are talking here about people that live in the middle of absolutely nothing and are basically 100% self sufficient- leave it to a government entity to screw up the works.
It makes me sick to see the waste! Yesterday, a tree trimming outfit cut down a huge Sycamore and and 2 big Ashes. I stopped and ask. They said no, to much trouble. So I ask what are you goong to do with it? They said we have a revine we dump it in. Great. There was enough wood there to heat my house for 3 years. Sinfull.
Hope they don't plan to bury that...not legal...at least around here...but I think it is an EPA thing, so probably a federal law. Anyways, you could tell them you won't turn 'em in...if they help you load
Flip side is that I have seen one guy take all the piles left at the side if the road. It is left for the public, and some common courtesy to leave some for the next guy never hurt. If the pile is there a few days later, have at it then.
Got a little more today. Ash and Mullberry. Oh,and here is my old Wood Boss. Bought it in about 1980. Still going strong.
National park rule here is you may pick up the wood to burn only if you will burn it in a campfire in the park campground, but you may not pick the wood up in the campground...I can't figure that one out. I got stopped by a ranger once for picking up power line trimmings, I asked if it was OK if I sold it back to the tourists one bundle at a time to burn in the campground...he did not find the humor in it!
Special scrounge today. The city cut down a 100 year old hard maple that I climbed and played in 60 years ago. It was a half block from my home place. I got as much as I could before they bulldozed it into a pile to burn. That wood is going to be special to burn in a few years.
Chief- Cut you few cookies for coasters, or maybe a clock.... Or run a large diameter hole saw thru a cookie for a picture frame. Would be a shame to burn all those memories
Yeah, I have cut a few cookies already. I don't remember a lot from my childhood, but I sure remember that tree
Indeed that wood has special meaning! When you burn it maybe it should be on a special occasion like Christmas day or your birthday if its during the burning season.
I agree Sean. And my birthday being October 24, it will be perfect. I will remember all you guys too when I burn it. Stuff like that doesn't mean much to non-burners.
It's hot but can't help myself. This retired stuff lets you do when you want. I never cut wood in the summer before I retired. But the landscape facility is really producing. I just take my time. A load of Ash and Hard Maple today.
I never could get anything from that place when I worked all week because they bulldoze it up in a pile a every few days. But now, I can check it every day and get it when the gettins good
