Ok as I lay here getting ready to hit the hay, I got to wondering if anyone else has a certain way of falling asleep. Even after a long day a lot of times I have trouble shutting the brain off. I dont want to take medications to knock me out so I usually do one of two things. Lately Ive been watching a documentary on DVD called "Alone in the Wilderness". Its not that it's boring but the narration (or lack of) and natural scenery is pretty peaceful I guess. The other way is to listen to old time radio shows, like Dragnet or something similar. Anyone else have particular things you do to help you nod off?
Nothing helps just stay up later. I have some tart cherry juice on order supposed to have melatonin in it. I'll keep u posted
Summer months are the worst. Long hours , HOT and the phone rings right up till 8pm most nites. Gets hard to settle down with all the madness . Glass of milk and Valerian Root knocks me out colder than Mike Tyson!
no way would that put me to sleep, alone in the wilderness brings me to full attention and i make popcorn
Firewood! (Is there anything it can't do?) Sawing some logs always helps me saw a few more. I do like to have some "white noise" while Im trying to fall asleep - tv or a fan, usually both.
I find that once I hop in the sack, reading something that is pleasant (and I enjoy) vs. technical, for about 20 minutes usually puts me under. Also, being retired, I tend to have a pretty standard routine. I know this is hard if you are still pounding the working world.
45 minutes of laying in the dark is pretty typical for me, even if my brain is shut off. My wife is a loud snorer too which makes things worse. Some nights I put in ear plugs which for some reason, even if my wife isn't snoring, puts me to sleep in about 5-10 minutes but I hate not being able to hear what's going on in the house. I'm a light sleeper I'll often notice those bumps in the night before the dogs do.
Very good recommendation. But turn the radio and tv off. Or set a timer so they shut off. The light from a TV is proven to interfere with sleep. I lay flat on my back. Have white noise. then start at my foot and work my way up trying to tell that part of my body to relax. Seldom reach my head before I am asleep. don't be paying bills etc before going to bed. Also, I don't listen to the news before going to bed.
But don't get ideas about taking melatonin by itself! That stuff can do some very bad things to you. The tart cherry juice is also good for stiff joints and arthritis. Some mix it with water but I like it straight. Tastes great but I haven't had any for a while now.
After laying awake solving life's problems, I remember that there is one who will always take care of you. Singing hymns in my head will send me off to sleep. Singing them aloud is guaranteed to keep campinspecter awake as my singing is more noise than melodious - joyful noise but painful to listen to if you are a good singer yourself.
No singing here but I do read my Bible most every night before drifting off to sleep. I have had some big time problems staying asleep but hopefully we have them under control now.
Staying asleep has been a recent problem for me as well. We've got this little bundle of joy that's recently decided she wants fed every 2-3 hours, I call her the "Night Terrorist". She's part of a non-sleeper cell.
I usually fall asleep in my chair before hitting the sack, then lay awake for a few minutes once I get there. I never, NEVER, sleep as late as today.........11:22 am. I think I'm still recuperating from the trip. No real tricks, except I like the ideas re: not doing any thinking before bed. No bills, no news, no mayhem, no looting or pillaging. You know, the usual.
I worked nights when mine were little, but I still remember that when I got home from work, my oldest was always standing in her crib waiting for me to come home. That was about '81, so yes, I think you're right.
I believe you. I could travel for work about 10-20% of the time if I wanted to and would probably get a lot better sleep in a hotel room, but I'm doing my best to not travel at all since we've had her.
Im glad I didn't have to travel when the kids were small. With the kids in college and beyond, I'm away from my bride about 3 days a week now. Not what I like but she takes it a whole lot better than kids would have. Wait...did I just take my own thread off topic? Doh!!
I usually don't have a problem falling asleep.... My head hits the pillows and zzzz's come out... But here lately, its that deep and prolonged "good" sleep is what I'm lacking due to my new work schedule...
