Got all wood stacked recently and decided to share some pics. First, replacing the stacks I burned last winter. You can see the metal roofing that I will cover the pile with come fall. It is stacked on pallets and totals just under 8 cords. Also got the firepit wood along with uglies stacked. Some punky wood, pine, lumber scraps and the odd pieces that would not split right. What doesn't get burned outdoors will get burned inside this fall. Also been using some wood in this clay bake oven that I made. This can cook pizzas, pies, bake bread, etc. It is a mixture of clay, sand, and straw. It is sitting on pallets that I got for free, and a layer of firebrick that I got for free. Had to build a roof over this otherwise rain would destroy it in short order. Also built a door for it to use when baking bread. Finally decided to try my first Holz Hausen with the wood that I had left over. Using 4 pallets as the base, and it's nowhere near done. No idea how much wood it will take to finish. Here is the humble beginning. The first pic is the most recent, and I can safely say no more is getting added to this until the Virginia heat and humidity ease up a bit!
Great pics and progress red oak Would be great to see a separate thread about your cobbed oven - I like what I see!
I wish I could get my wood to season in big stacks like that. I tried an ash stack once that was three splits wide, on pallets and top covered. After 3 years the splits in the middle row were just about as wet as the day I split them. Now everything is single rows with a few feet between them.
This surprises me a bit. But I also know of someone else who had problems drying his wood like this. I convinced him to move his wood stacks onto higher ground, which he did. The following fall his wood was the driest he had ever had, except for the wood we gave him.
