Anything south of Martinsville puts you in Eden so it is not all bad. I used to travel there with some frequency to the Speedway as well as to Cascade to buy tractor parts from old man Fitts. If you have wood host a GTG, it would be about a 6.5 hour trip for me.
Eden is sort of southeast; you would have to get off of 220 onto 87 south. Don't go to far south or you will miss me LOL.
Yes, I know Fitts; I have been there many years ago; Mum was still alive so I guess it has been awhile. Most of the stuff in the yard was fairly picked over even back then. Mum and I went to get a muffler from Fitts; today I just mail order most stuff. The Old Girl is a '49 8N Ford. I would like to find an original; or original style; inductive pickup amp gauge for the Old Girl. There use to be a tractor salvage yard on highway 8 that I have visited as well; Not sure where exactly, go south from Stuart on 8 until you see it on your right.
Straight south puts you in Matrimony, though you have to take back roads to get there. I remember a trip to the races there one Sunday and passing the Hardee's on E. Church St. They had a big sign up that proclaimed "Chicken on Tuesday. If I knew I would have 25,000 carloads of drunk rednecks driving past my restaurant, I would have made damm sure chicken was there on Sunday...
My understanding is old man Fitts passed away and his son Ben is running the place now. It has been 15 or more years since I have been there, he still had parts for the Case and Fordson tractors I was fooling with at the time.
Hi Kimberly--just wondering how the rest of your story came out--were you able to start working on winter preparations for burning and did anyone step up and seek you out to help? Plenty of summer/fall left to brace for the onslaught--let us know...
Hello everyone, sorry I disappeared on everyone. Is there a way to get notices in my email? I had good intentions but so far I have not done much. There is one pile of wood beside the shed that my friend helped me with back in early spring that I need to split. The other day I was going to pump the tyre on the Old Girl and see if I could make it back in the woods to where that red oak is sitting. It didn't happen. I have not had a good summer. I was hoping my friend would make it down for a visit. I do need to start moving my arse and get some firewood done. I never got The Beast to the shop to ask them about the starter recoil. My friend insists it is not the recoil but something else wrong with the saw so I guess I need to get it to the shop and ask them. So how has everyone been?
Go to your profile and find "Preferences" on the left, under "Settings"....this is what pops up when you click on it..... Get out there and split that pile by the shed..... Then, put that wood into this configuration :stacke: Heating season is right around the corner.
Thanks Eric. As hot as it is now, heating is the last thing on my mind LOL. But yes, need to get it taken care of asap
^^^^^ + WIND, during the SUMMER will keep you warm and worry free about running your stove EVERY WINTER.... Do what ya gotta do, but get on it soon as ya can.
Eric VW I did not put the carrier on but I got my little splitter out of the shed and did split some wood. Gosh is it hot and humid out there; I got soaking wet and mainly just carrying the logs. I barely made a dent in the pile. I noticed one of my little rubber thingys on the feet is missing; now where did it get to. I will take a short break but need to get to my walk project. That sweetgum is hard on the little splitter on the bigger rounds and with knots.
I'm guessing some people would rather burn wet than seasoned wood. There are so many people out there like that. My neighbors relative that lives about a mile from me is the same way only she has her logs delivered usually in October. This year, I thought I had her convinced that it would make her life easier if she burned real seasoned wood. Last year (and several years before that I have been helping with the cutting, splitting and stacking of those logs) her logs, once split came in at 25 to 32% moisture content. She still managed to get most of it burned but did mention to my neighbor that she just couldn't get her place to heat up. I had talked with her several times and she said she would have a load of logs brought in during the spring or early summer. I told her if she did I would get my butt over there and get it cut split and stacked so that it could start seasoning properly or at least get partially seasoned since truly seasoned wood will give a lot more heat than the wet stuff. Well, so far no logs have been delivered so she will be trying to burn wet wood once again. I could easily bring over a load of 3 or 4 year seasoned wood for her, but the chances are she would burn her place to the ground, and blame my wood to boot. I guess there will always be those who wait until the last minute to get the wood in, unlike those of us that are a couple, three, or more seasons ahead. (I'm an easy 6 plus seasons ahead) Then they will blame their stove, the draft, the chimney, or whatever else they can think of for a fire not burning the way it should. But not the wet wood! At this point, it's almost too late even going with a firewood kiln!
Drying wood for 2016/2017 is a lost cause at this point. Buy some eco bricks if the stove us your only option. Otherwise run the furnace.
And what was the point of you coming in ragging on ? Did it make you feel better in some way? If so, then I am glad that my woes is helping you to do that.
Hey folks I thought the forum was suppose to give encouragement Peace All, it is good. This winter I will be sitting in my warm house in front of my wood stove enjoying the fire sipping on hot cocoa; life will be good
