Shame to waste, but profitable for some.

The Allies would have won with or without the USA, we just sped things up a bit and kept post war Germany from speaking Russian. And my beliefs are that FDR's policies kept the breadlines around longer than they should have been and because of those policies entering the war was the only way to bring things back in a hurry. If he hadn't been around so long, the depression would have been over much sooner.

But I don't disagree that they helped build the booming economy. But having money available to buy things that were once considered luxury items put us on a path of spend-spend-spend, and we haven't stopped since then, even when money isn't available.

 

The worst thing the boomers ever did or a a portion of them was to ruin our education system. The 60's radicals who may have begun by protesting a senseless war morphed into Marxist filth who've been hanging out in academia brainwashing you minds for the last 40 years.

 

I agree now they are in power, as many "old timers" I heard say, it's the 60s all over again.

 

I agree about fdr we are still feeling his socialists effects today, but leaving Germany unchecked who knows what would have happened.

 

Germany wouldn't have been unchecked, they had pretty much lost the war anyway by the time we entered. What we helped with there is keeping the Soviets from controlling all of post-war Germany. Who knows, the Soviets may have ended up taking over Japan as well without USA involvement, which would have drastically changed history if Japan had become communist.

 

Even during the depression, farmers would destroy edible produce rather than give it away. They feared, correctly, that people would just wait until the price went down to a pittance to buy. So, lots of apples went to the pigs, or over the bridge. My uncle found a bunch of apples floating down the creek when he was a kid, his brother and he waded out to get as many as they could to take home to the hungry family at home. If the person who dumped them had spotted them, they probably would have had some buckshot thrown their way.
Back in the 70's when times were tight and food was precious, my husband happened to luck out as the Giant was tossing out old produce--he managed to get us about 30 pounds of potatoes and some other vegetables, as well as a few loaves of bread before it hit the dumpster. We picked over the vegetables and the bread was just fine, we put a lot in the freezer.
Some folks raised an eyebrow at our dumpster dive, but I was brought up to waste not.
