Here in my town we have a landscape waste facility. After a recent storm the city crews hauled tons of wood there. Problem is, they just pike it up and "try" to burn it. What a waste! I got a little, but you have to be quick. They bulldoze it up and burn it every few days. I worked for the city for 37 years and never could talk them out of it. Lots of us would like to have the wood but they don't want to trouble themselves. Well, I got a little bit anyway.
Good to see you got a little...our city dumps all wood that they cut in an area outside their "bullpen" for the citizens to grab as they wish...most of it disappears in the first week or so...about the only thing that goes to the dump, or gets chipped, is ugly crotches and the like. There is a 80 some year old guy that is out there splitting rounds by hand and loading into his truck almost everyday whenever there is wood there to be had...impressive!
I hope when I'm 80 I can still do it. Although splitting by hand is out of the question. I'd haul a splitter.
Chief, you should have more pull that that. Get hold of some of those idiots and pound some sense into them. If all else fails, get out there quick after a storm! Speaking of which, I know you've had a few lately.
Around here liability is the hurdle. Power line trimming crews will leave wood stacked neatly at the side of the road for anyone to stop and grab. No cutting necessary. Not sure why they could not do the same.
It adds up quick, Chief! And I agree with Sav, use some of your clout and talk some sense into them. You're a respected man of the community, go to see meetings and see if you can't get them to dump the rounds and firewood stuff in a separate area for guys and gals to pick at....

Agree about the liability issue. I worked for a company that supplies crossties for the railroads. They used to sell ends lopped off the ties for firewood. It was green but almost no bark. Well someone got hurt loading the wood and sued the company. the corporate attorneys nixed selling firewood after that.
Yeah, someday, if you cross your property line you will get sued. Sad world we live in. Especially when you consider it is still the best place in the world to live.
Around here the landscape waste piles up until either the town or a private contractor brings in a big tub grinder and turns it all into mulch. It's then free for the taking. We have a local waste hauler who also does large scale composting (mandatory in Vermont) and he uses a lot of the chips and waste in his composting operation.
I'm lucky here in that sense. Buddies with the two town guys, they either set it aside or let me know where it is.
That is a really good idea. Around here, the road trimming crews chip it all up, right on the spot. I recently saw the interstate do miles of trimming back. Huge tree cut down, their fate was the chipper.
That could be federal land there is a rule about putting it back to the ground.. Dumb! Smugglers notch, did some thinning.. cut down 200 old sugar maples and chipped then on spot.. in state where 1 in 5 burn wood and 300 a cord is normal many were governor went to town hall and explained it he agreed it was dumb but was fed rules... As VT pays for dry wood for low income heat sources he agreed!
